Now that you are back at the Con gure Data Source window of the wizard, notice that the drop-down list is populated with the new connection that was just con gured, and you can see the connection string. The connection string that is displayed will be placed into the web.con g le. Click the Next button. 5. The next step asks you to name the connection string. It gives a default name, NorthwindConnectionString, which will be suf cient for your purposes. Click the Next button again (Figure 6-8).

You will now arrive at the next step of the wizard that will help you con gure the SELECT statement, which will specify what data and information to return. From the drop-down list, choose the Products table and check the eld names for ProductName and UnitPrice. The information being returned will be all of the product names along with their respective prices (Figure 6-9). Notice the SELECT statement that will be placed in your code: SELECT [UnitPrice], [ProductName] FROM [Products] Click the Next button, and you will actually test the SELECT statement.

8. Before moving forward, let s look at the HTML that was created by the wizard: <%@ Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head runat="server"> <title>Untitled Page</title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:NorthwindConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [UnitPrice], [ProductName] FROM [Products]"></asp:SqlDataSource> </div> </form> </body> </html> You can see that the SELECT statement you con gured is built into the SqlDataSource element. But you are not nished! You have successfully created a connection to the data you want to use, but you have no mechanism that will display that data. Therefore, let s move on to con guring the GridView to use the SqlDataSource so the information will be displayed. 9. Drag and drop a GridView control over the Web Form. When you place the control on the page, you will see a small window appear that will ask you what to connect to. Select the previously created data source as shown in Figure 6-11. After selecting the data source, click somewhere on an open space within the web page. You now have the GridView con gured to use the SqlDataSource to display the information from the database.

CHAPTER 6 WORKING WITH DATA USING ADO.NET
Figure 6-12. The GridView at runtime
In Exercise 6-1, you saw how the data source and data controls can work together to display information from the database to the end user on the web page. You used the code generated from the wizard to display this data. However, undoubtedly there will be occasions when you need to have more control over what is displayed from the data source. This brings us to the next topic: data binding.
Data Binding
Data binding is the act of linking the controls placed within a Web Form to the data source. Many of the properties of the controls can have their value data bound to that of the data source. When data binding, typically the values you are seeking are an individual column from a database table. Using data binding to retrieve your values from the data source gives you some additional flexibility over the data itself. Many times the data being returned from the data source needs to have some type of formatting or customized display. Using the specialized syntax of data binding, you can achieve this task quite easily. You will explore the benefits of data binding soon within an exercise; however, let s first examine exactly how the data binding syntax works and is used. The expression used for data binding is quite simple. Here s an example: <%# Eval("expression") %>
