The sheer number of properties that WPF makes available for even the simplest of controls (such as a Button) can be overwhelming. Figure 8-9 shows that the properties have been broken down into families such as Brushes, Appearance, and Layout. Fortunately, Blend gives you the facility to search for a property. For example, if you type f into the search box, the Properties window will try to keep up by closing all property panes that do not contain a property beginning with f. Then if you type another letter for example, o it will redraw again. You can see the results in Figure 8-10. As you can see in Figure 8-10, the results are showing FocusVisualStyle and ForceCursor. If you then type an n into the search box (so that it reads fon), it collapses to just show the Text pane. This shows how smart the search engine is nowhere in this dialog is the word font shown but because you have typed fon, the likelihood that you are looking for font settings is pretty high, so you are shown the text settings properties (see Figure 8-11).

Most properties have visual setters, and the interface is quite intuitive, helping you to get very fine-grained control over how you want your UI to look. You can, of course, also override the settings that the Properties windows give you by hand-editing the XAML.

WPF has a number of layout controls that act as containers for other controls. These give you control over how and where those controls appear on the screen. In addition, they dictate the behavior of the controls when the window is resized, allowing you to design your application for multiple-user flexibility. The following list describes the layout controls that are available to you: Canvas: This is a simple layout control that allows you to freely place your controls anywhere you like, but you lose flexibility when the screen is resized. Grid: This control gives you flexibility to place the controls anywhere you like on the screen. The Grid allows you to divide its area up into rows and columns and place child controls within each of the resulting cells. Thus, when the screen is laid out, the controls will appear within their grid cell. StackPanel: This control lays out its children in a horizontal or vertical stack. It is very useful for implementing UI elements such as toolbars or vertical button bars. DockPanel: This allocates an entire edge of the screen to its children. The toolbar interaction windows and management areas of the Blend IDE are great examples of DockPanels. If you consider any area like this (such as the dockable controls in Visual Studio or Office), you ll get the idea of how a DockPanel works. WrapPanel: This lays its children out from left to right in sequence. When it hits the edge of its bounds, the controls wrap to the line below.

Using the Grid Layout Control
The default window created by Blend when you create a new project already has a Grid control placed on it. This is a single-cell grid, so it behaves just like a Canvas, allowing you to freely place controls anywhere on the screen. However, to get the most out of your Grid, you should create columns and rows. This can be done from within the Property Editor. This Grid, by default, is called LayoutRoot, so be sure that this is selected in the Objects and Timeline pane, on the left side of the screen (see Figure 8-12).

Figure 8-12. Selecting an item in the Objects and Timeline pane
When it is selected, it will be highlighted in yellow. Next, you should create some rows and columns using the Property Editor. These are found in the extended layout section of the Properties window. To find them, expand Layout and then click the extend button at the bottom of the Layout pane, or simply search for Row or Column as described earlier. ColumnDefinitions and RowDefinitions are collections, so you ll see an ellipsis (. . .) button beside them in the Property Editor. Click this, and the Collection Editor (Figure 8-13) will appear.
