This option enables you to browse your computer for an existing item to add to your web site. This can be anything from an HTML page to a cascading style sheet to a media item that you are going to reference from one of your pages. Note that the IDE will create a new copy of the item in the folder that contains your web site. That is, VWDE does not try to reference the item from its original location, since on the web server there are likely file system permission issues to deal with.

This option creates a new folder within the directory that contains your web site. This new folder should be distinguished from an ASP.NET folder (discussed in the next section). Use the New Folder option to create directories that you will use to segregate your site or centralize content of a specific type, such as JavaScript (.js) files or media (images).
Add ASP.NET Folder
ASP .NET recognizes a handful of specially named web site directories as containing information required by the framework for specific purposes. For example, App_Code contains source files that will be compiled the first time the web site is accessed (or modified). The Bin subdirectory contains precompiled code in .NET assemblies. We ve already discussed App_Data. If you want to use one of these directory types, you should use this menu instead of creating a new folder and giving it the associated name (such as Bin or App_Code). The options available in the Add ASP.NET Folder submenu are as follows:
Bin: Adds a directory to your web site that contains referenced .NET assemblies
( binary files). This directory is used to add the assemblies of components that you want to use on your web site, but aren t automatically referenced by ASP.NET. So, if you are referencing a third-party assembly, the dynamic-link library (DLL) file for that assembly will be placed in this directory.
App_Code: In addition to adding code behind a page, you may want to centralize some
of your code in a class. It s good practice to keep these code files in a special code directory for security and ease of use. Selecting this option creates this directory for you.
CHAPTER 2 s BASICS OF WEB DEVELOPMENT WITH ASP.NET
App_GlobalResources: This is a directory that you use to store resources that are acces-
sible to every page or project in a web application. It isn t really useful for web site projects because they have only one project, and local resources (see the next item in this list) would be more appropriate.
App_LocalResources: This is a directory that you can use to store resources that are
accessible to every page in your project.
App_WebReferences: When you want to access a web service, you create a web refer-
ence to that service, and the IDE will create proxy code that can be used to communicate with the web service. This folder will contain the proxy code and other information necessary for this task. It is created automatically for you whenever you create a web reference.
App_Browsers: This directory is used to store files that can be used by ASP.NET in
response to queries from different browsers. This is particularly useful if you create your own server controls because you can specify how the control behaves for different browsers by placing special XML files in this directory.
Theme: This creates a directory that can be used to store a theme for your web application. A theme is a skin file that contains definitions for how each control should be rendered.
When you use code in a .skin file and place the file in the Theme directory, you can then specify the theme to be used as part of the page declaration. It s a nice way of specifying look and feel without defining it on each control on your page. Building themes with ASP .NET is a powerful way of adding flexibility to your site. To learn a bit more about ASP .NET theme capabilities, see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/ library/ykzx33wh.aspx.
