Under Super Admin Users, you may add more users to your network. They will be added to the site you selected in the Dashboard Settings section of your network options. Individual site administrators can then invite those users to become users of the subsite as well. They can also invite new users by creating a username and sending an email invitation. To add a user to a subsite, to to Dashboard My Sites and visit the subsite s Dashboard using the Backend link. Then to go Users Add New, where you ll see the form shown in Figure 13-12. Enter the user s username, if it exists, or create one for them if they are not already registered. Enter their email address and choose their role. To invite the user, leave the checkbox blank and press Add User. They ll receive a confirmation link allowing them to complete the registration process and fill in their account profile. If you are logged in as a super administrator, you can skip the confirmation email. As soon as you press Add User, the user will be registered. They will not receive a password, so you ll need to edit their account and create a password, or tell them to use the forgot password link on the login page to generate a new one.

If you have chosen to allow people to sign up for sites on your network, you are about to discover a whole new kind of spam: splogs. Just as spammers will leave comments on random blogs and sign up for accounts on forums, they will sign up for blogs on your network and fill them with junk. In the list of sites under Super Admin Sites, you can mark sites as spam. However, keeping up with splogs could soon consume more of your time than you re willing to spend. There are a number of plugins that help prevent spam user registrations. WP Hashcash is one good choice. Its options are shown in Figure 13-13.

Figure 13-13. WP Hashcash options Hashcash works by adding JavaScript to your login and comment forms (according to the options you choose). If the script runs, you know the user visited your site in a real browser and was therefore not a spam robot. If the script fails, the user will not be able to sign up. Since this plugin does rely on JavaScript, it will block anyone who has disabled JavaScript in his or her browser. Consider your audience carefully and decide whether this trade-off is acceptable.

Network Plugins and Themes
Themes installed in your main site will not be available to the network sites until you activate them under Super Admin Themes, as shown in Figure 13-14. Individual sites administrators may install themes, but those themes will be available only within that site.
SETTING UP THE NETWORK
Figure 13-14. Activating themes for the network When you install new plugins in Plugins Add New, keep in mind that the activate link shown will activate for the current site only. To activate it for the whole network, go back to the plugin list without activating and choose Network Activate from the plugin list.

Plugin and Theme Options
Plugins and themes that use the settings API should work correctly in network sites. Older plugins that handle the options without the help of the settings API might not work. Plugins and themes that are enabled for all the network sites will be installed on those sites with their default options. There is currently no way to deploy themes or plugins with a set of options you have chosen, unless you set up a single site as a template and use the Blog Templates plugin to create the other network sites, as described in the next section.
