Creating the Web Service
Now that you have the database ready, you can proceed to create the web service. To do so, choose File New Web Site from the menu to open the New Web Site dialog box. Name the web service project ECommerceService.

The SqlHelper class consists of a static constructor and three static methods: ExecuteNonQuery(), ExecuteScalar(), and ExecuteDataSet(). The constructor of SqlHelper reads the database connection string from the <connectionStrings> section of the web.config file and stores it in a private static variable. This is done with the help of the ConfigurationManager class. The ExecuteNonQuery() method is intended for executing action queries such as INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE. The method takes two parameters: the SQL query to be executed and an array of the SqlParameter class representing parameters of the query. Then the method creates an instance of SqlConnection and SqlCommand. The SqlParameters are added to the Parameters collection. The database connection is then opened and the query is executed by using the ExecuteNonQuery() method of the SqlCommand object, which returns the number of records affected by the query and is returned to the caller. The ExecuteScalar() method is used to execute SELECT queries that return just one value. It takes two parameters: the SQL query to be executed and an array of the SqlParameter class representing parameters of the query.
