7. You ll need a connection to the SSE Northwind database, so let s create one. Click View Database Explorer to open Database Explorer (which is similar to SSMSE s Object Explorer). Notice in Figure 2-26 that there are no Data Connections nodes.

CHAPTER 2 s GETTING TO KNOW OUR TOOLS
Figure 2-27. Choose Data Source window
9. Select Microsoft SQL Server Database File. Note that the data source is a SQL Server database file and will be accessed through the .NET data provider for SQL Server (SqlClient, to be covered in 4). Click Continue. The Add Connection window appears, as in Figure 2-28. The connection will use Windows Authentication, meaning any user who can log into the server machine can connect to the Northwind database.
Figure 2-28. Add Connection window
CHAPTER 2 s GETTING TO KNOW OUR TOOLS
10. You need to specify a database to connect to. Browse to the Northwind database, in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\northwnd.mdf, and open it. Then, and this is very important, click the Advanced button. You ll see the window in Figure 2-29.
Figure 2-29. Advanced Properties window
s Caution The next step is essential, whenever you create a connection in VBE (but not if you connect in
Visual Basic using ADO.NET, as you ll learn how to do in 4). If you don t do it, the database will be unusable, and won t even be recoverable from a backup. The steps for recovering Northwind, in case this happens, are given at the end of the chapter, after the Summary section.
11. Scroll down to the Initial Catalog property and enter northwind. Then click OK. When you return to the Add Connection window, click Test Connection. A message box should appear telling you that the test connection succeeded. Click OK to close it. Then click OK to save the connection. A northwnd.mdf node appears in Database Explorer. Expand the node and you ll see the nodes in Figure 2-30, which are similar to the ones shown in Figure 2-12 for SSMSE.
CHAPTER 2 s GETTING TO KNOW OUR TOOLS
Figure 2-30. An expanded connection in Database Explorer
12. Expand the Tables node and right-click the Employees node. You ll see the menu in Figure 2-31. Database Explorer basically offers the same features for database access and management as SSMSE s Object Explorer, but it doesn t offer administration functions for managing instances. VBE s New Query has a slightly different format from SSMSE s New Query, but it s as powerful. VBE s Show Table Data has the same format and functionality as SSMSE s Open Table. You can now close VBE.

CHAPTER 2 s GETTING TO KNOW OUR TOOLS
Using BOL
BOL is the official source of SQL Server documentation. The documentation for SQL Server Express is part of BOL. BOL is a hypertext application that is both a blessing and a bane for SQL Server users. It s an enormously rich source of tutorials as well as reference information, but despite the fact that it s extensively indexed, finding what you need to know can sometimes be quite frustrating. We ll only point out a few things to help you get started: 1. To open BOL, click Start All Programs Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Documentation and Tutorials SQL Server Books Online. You should see the screen in Figure 2-32.
Figure 2-32. Opening BOL
CHAPTER 2 s GETTING TO KNOW OUR TOOLS
2. There are five nodes in the Contents tree. The third one leads to SSE-specific documentation, but unless you plan to use SSE exclusively as a production server, you probably won t find this very useful. What you ll find most useful is the first node, SQL Server 2005 Books Online, so expand it. Then expand the SQL Server Language Reference node and the Transact-SQL Reference node within it. Scroll up to the top and you ll see the screen in Figure 2-33. All T-SQL language components are listed alphabetically. Now click the Index tab below the Contents tree. You ll see the screen in Figure 2-34.
