2. Add an ORDER BY clause to the query and execute the ALTER PROCEDURE statement:

How It Works
It works very simply. SSMSE retrieves the source code for the stored procedure so you can conveniently edit it. After you ve executed the ALTER PROCEDURE statement, the stored procedure is updated in the database. There is no need to refresh the Stored Procedures node. You just right-clicked on the procedure and executed it.
Deleting Stored Procedures
SSMSE makes it easy to delete stored procedures.
Try It Out: Modifying Our Trivial Stored Procedure
Let s delete our first stored procedure for retrieving a specific employee s orders. 1. In Object Explorer, right-click dbo.sp_Order_By_employeeId and click Delete. When the confirmation window appears (see Figure 12-10), click OK.

2. Note that the dbo.sp_Order_By_employeeId node immediately disappears from Object Explorer. See Figure 12-11.

How It Works
There s nothing simpler. You just right-clicked on the procedure and deleted it.
s You don t need to use Object Explorer to delete stored procedures. You can execute a DELETE Tip
PROCEDURE statement yourself, but it s more work.
Working with Stored Procedures in Visual Basic
Now that you ve created some stored procedures, you can use them with Visual Basic.

Try It Out: Executing a Stored Procedure with No Input Parameters
Let s execute sp_Select_All_Employees, which takes no input and returns only a result set, a list of all employees sorted by name. 1. In VBE, create a new Console Application project named 12. When Solution Explorer opens, save the solution. 2. Rename the 12 project CallSp1. Replace the code in Module1.vb with the code in Listing 12-1.

How It Works
This wasn t much different from CommandReader.cs in 6. The biggest difference is how you created and configured the command:

Instead of using New to create a command (and pass a query and a connection to its constructor), you used the connection s CreateCommand method. You then specified the command type was for a stored procedure call rather than a query. Finally, you set the command text to the stored procedure name. The rest of the code changed only trivially, to handle displaying the extra column. You used ExecuteReader() just as you would for a query, which makes sense, since the stored procedure simply executes a query and returns a result set.
Try It Out: Executing a Stored Procedure with Parameters
You ll call the sp_Orders_By_EmployeeId2 stored procedure, supplying the employee ID as an input parameter and displaying the result set, the output parameter, and the return value. 1. Add a new Console Application project named RunSp2 to your 12 solution. 2. Replace the code in Module1.vb with the code in Listing 12-2.
