That s all it really comes down to installing Rails is a mere one-liner. The key is in having a working installation of Ruby and RubyGems. Before we get there, though, there s one other ingredient you ll need to use Rails, and that s a database server. As you re well aware by now, Rails is specifically for building web applications. Well, it s a rare web application that isn t backed by a database. In fact, Rails is so sure you ll be using a database for your application that it s downright stubborn about working very nicely without one. While Rails works with nearly every database out there, we ll be using one called MySQL. MySQL is open source, easy to install, and incredibly well supported for web development. Perhaps that s why it s the most popular database among Rails developers. You ll start by installing MySQL and making sure it s working properly. Then you ll install Ruby and RubyGems, and finally you ll get to use the magical one-liner and install Rails. Here are the steps in order: Install MySQL Install Ruby Install RubyGems Install Rails Before we begin, we should point out that the many ways to skin a cat adage applies to Rails installation. For as many platforms as the Rails stack runs on, there are as many ways to install it. Here, we describe what we feel is the easiest and most reliable way to install Rails for your platform. While we ll go about the process differently for OS X, Linux, and Windows, you ll find they all amount to the same thing. No matter which platform you re using, you ll need to get familiar with the command line. This likely won t be a problem for the Linux crowd, but it s possible that some OS X users and certainly many Windows users won t have much experience with it. If you re using OS X, you can find a terminal emulator in /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app. If you re on Windows, you can open a command prompt by clicking Start Run, typing cmd, and clicking OK. Note that we ll be using the command line extensively in our travels with Rails. Also, a quick note for OS X/Linux/UNIX users: your instructions are nearly interchangeable. If you re using a Mac and would prefer to use a package manager such as Fink or MacPorts (see the sidebar on the next page), the Linux instructions will prove useful. The same is true for Linux/UNIX users who wish to compile everything themselves: the OS X instructions should prove a drop-in replacement.

You would think that given the prevalence of OS X among Rails developers (the entire core team uses OS X) that installing it would be easy. Alas, it s not. Due to the existence of a slightly crippled instance of Ruby preinstalled on most OS X 10.4 systems, we ll go through the steps for building almost everything from scratch. The exception is MySQL, which has a good installer.

Don t let the word compile scare you. While it s slightly more involved than a oneclick install, it s a relatively painless experience. To make things easier, we ve even provided a script that you can run that will take care of most of the work for you. It s at the end of this section. Be aware, though, that the script won t install MySQL for you you have to do that yourself and you ll still need the Apple Developer Tools installed for the script to work, so be sure you don t skip the first few steps. (Can you see now why we put the script at the tail end of the section )
