Ajax allows for rich user interaction, moving away from the traditional hyperlinked applications of the first-generation web. Script.aculo.us (http://script.aculo.us) is a great JavaScript library, built on top of Prototype, which provides some additional functionality to make the development of Web 2.0 applications easier. For example, it supplies autocompletion and animation effects such as drag-and-drop. As with Prototype, Rails builds on top of all that JavaScript wizardry and provides a set of helpers that make integrating script.aculo.us into your Rails applications a breeze. We ll go over some of the most useful script.aculo.us helpers in this section.

Auto-completion of text fields is a technique that helps users fill in forms quickly and more accurately, based on data that already exists for specific fields in the database. To see an example of this type of functionality, take a look at Google Suggest (http:// google.com/webhp complete=1). When you type a search term in the search text box, Google Suggest recommends search terms that possibly match the subject you re searching. In Rails, the auto_complete_for helper provides this type of functionality. Let s enhance our events application by making it suggest possible values for the Location field, saving the user some data-input time. This will help minimize the margin for error in cases where the location is already in the database, while still allowing the user to enter the name of a new location. To see this in action, start by adding the auto_complete_for declaration to the events controller as shown in Listing 7-16.

This piece of code will tell the controller to return a list of the existing locations in the database. By default, auto_complete_for limits the number of returned records to 10 and orders the query by the field being searched. As always, those are sensible defaults; however, if you need to overwrite them, just specify them in the hash passed to auto_complete_for, as follows:

On the template side, we need to make an adjustment to how we re dealing with the location field. Fortunately, this is easy. Simply replace the following lines in app/ views/events/_form.rhtml:

<p><label for="event_location">Location</label><br/> <%= text_field_with_auto_complete :event, :location %></p>
The code is slim, and the result is quite pleasing. As you can see in Figure 7-7, as soon as you start to type the location, the auto_complete_for helper runs a database search to find existing values for the Location field that match what you re typing. If you see the location you want to enter, you can select it (with the mouse or keyboard). If you don t see the location, you can ignore the suggested values and keep typing.

Adding an In-Place Editor
Another classic Ajax technique is the in-place editor. If you are a Flickr (http://flickr.com) user, you know that you can edit the description and title of your own photos by simply clicking the information you want to change. If you have the appropriate permissions, the text transforms into a text box that allows you to view and edit database records on a single page, making the process of editing information simpler and faster. You can achieve the same level of functionality in Rails with a simple helper called in_place_editor. The in_place_editor helper takes a couple of parameters: the first is the name of the element that contains the data to update, and the second is a hash of options, the most important of which is the URL of the action that will receive the Ajax call. To demonstrate, we ll make the event location editable in place by the user who owns the event. Open the event detail partial in the app/views/events/_event.rhtml and replace the following code.
