The subject of the email message to be sent. A hash used to expose objects from the model to the email template. The @body variable will be used most of the time, enforcing the use of the MVC pattern. A string or array of email addresses to which the message will be sent. A string specifying the sender of the email message. The date header. The default is the current date. A hash of specific headers to set for the message. A string or array of email addresses to carbon-copy with the message. A string or array of email addresses to blind-carbon-copy with the message. A string that specifies the character set to use for the message. The default is UTF-8. A string that specifies the content type for the message. The default is "text/plain", but can be set automatically in some cases (see the Adding Multiple Parts to Messages section later in this chapter).

CHAPTER 8 SENDING AND RECEIVING MAIL
The mailer generator created a template named after the action in the EventMailer class in the /app/views/event_mailer folder: email_friend.rhtml. This is the template that will be used to generate the body of the email sent when using the email_friend method. This template works similar to the templates used for regular views in Action Pack. It is an ERb file, which can contain text and markup mixed with some Ruby code. It also has the same one-to-one relationship between action and view exhibited by Action Pack each action in your mailer class will expect one template in the app/views directory.
Handling Basic Email
Let s start enhancing our events application by adding invite a friend functionality to the event page. The first iteration will be a very basic example that sends a text email message containing a brief message and the current server date. We want to show users a link that will toggle the display of a form where they can enter the email address of the friend to whom they want to send a message. Let s update the view now to include the new link directly after the event description. Add the code shown in Listing 8-3 to the end of the event partial in app/views/events/_event.rhtml.
Listing 8-3. Invite a Friend Functionality Added to app/views/events/_event.rhtml
<p> <%= link_to_function "invite a friend", "Element.toggle('email_friend')" %> </p> <div id="email_friend" style="display:none"> <% form_tag :action => 'email_friend', :id => event do %> <p>Your Name:<br /> <%= text_field_tag 'name' %></p> <p>Your friend's email:<br /> <%= text_field_tag 'email' %></p> <p><%= submit_tag 'Send email' %></p> <% end %> </div>
Now when you go to any events page, you ll see a link to invite a friend. Since we don t want to show the form all the time, we enclosed it in a hidden <div> tag. If users are interested in sending an email to a friend, they can click the link, and the form will be revealed through the help of some clever JavaScript. The end result is shown in Figure 8-1.
CHAPTER 8 SENDING AND RECEIVING MAIL
Figure 8-1. Invite a friend form
The interface is ready to go, but our events controller doesn t know how to handle this request yet. Our form is configured to submit to an action called email_friend, but that action doesn t exist. So, let s update the events controller and add the email_friend method shown in Listing 8-4.
Listing 8-4. email_friend Action Added to app/controllers/events_controller.rb
def email_friend event = Event.find(params[:id]) EventMailer.deliver_email_friend(params[:email]) flash[:notice] = 'Your friend has been notified about this event' redirect_to event_url(event) end
The action we just added is short and concise, but there s something that deserves a closer look. To perform the delivery, we call a class method on the EventMailer class called deliver_email_friend; however, this method doesn t actually exist in the EventMailer class. The magic is all in the Action Mailer deliver class method. By calling
