In the previous section, we used color names like red and black. These names are predefined by Shoes and about 100 or so are available to use. These are all shown at http://help.shoooes.net/ Colors.html. It is possible, however, to specify colors in other ways. Another way to specify a color is as an HTML style color. For example: Shoes.app do fill "#f00" stroke "#00f" rect 50, 50, 50, 50 end If you re familiar with how colors are expressed in HTML and CSS documents, the result should be obvious: a box drawn, filled in red, with an outline in blue.

It is also possible to use the rgb method to return a color object that can be used in any place in Shoes where colors may be specified. The rgb method accepts either three or four arguments: red, green, blue, and an optional alpha, value respectively. Red, green, and blue values between either 0 and 255 or 0.0 and 1.0 (decimal) can be specified in order to get the right color blend. An alpha value can also be provided to specify how transparent the color should be (its opacity). For example, we can recreate the previous example using rgb like so: Shoes.app do fill rgb(255, 0, 0) # or (1.0, 0, 0) using decimals stroke rgb(0, 0, 255) # or (0, 0, 1.0) using decimals rect 50, 50, 50, 50 end It is also possible to spawn a color picker dialog with which a user can choose a color. A color object is then returned in the same way as from rgb. This is covered later in this chapter.

As well as artistic elements, you can also put down text elements useful for labels or program output. The simplest is the para element: Shoes.app do stack :width => 150, :height => 1.0 do para "This is some text." para "This is another line of text." para "Hello, world!" end end

Notice that in this example, we ve put the para elements inside a stack. There s no technical reason for this, but it helps to see what happens to text when it s within a fixed-width stack. If you run this code, you will notice that the longer second block of text wraps within the 150-pixel-wide stack. It is possible, of course, to have other types of text and to stylize text within paragraphs: Shoes.app do stack do title "My App!" subtitle "It's a great app.." para "Hello! This is a ", em("really"), " great app!" para "How about some ", strong("bold"), " text " end end In this example, two alternative text elements are used, title and subtitle, and two text styles, em and strong, are used to stylize text being displayed by the para elements. em and strong are used respectively to show emphasized and strong text or, in more common terms, italic and bold. It is also worth noting that em and strong can be nested to get a double effect: Shoes.app do para "Some ", em(strong("bold AND italic")), " text." end The text produced by the last few examples comes out in a default sans-serif font (usually Helvetica or Arial), but it s possible to use other fonts. The global constant Shoes::FONTS is an array of all of the fonts you can use right away; typically all those that are installed on your machine. You can specify the fonts you wish to use for certain text elements by using the :font attribute. For example, let s create three lines of text using different fonts in different sizes: Shoes.app do stack do para "Example 1", :font => "Helvetica bold 24px" para "Example 2", :font => "Times" para "Example 3", :weight => "bold", :size => "12pt" end end
