In 5, I mentioned JRuby, an alternative implementation of Ruby that runs upon the JVM. JRuby is production ready and already quite popular among Ruby developers. As of mid2009, JRuby is the fastest Ruby implementation available. Running on the JVM, JRuby has access to the same libraries and frameworks as regular Java applications, and so you can choose to use Java GUI development libraries from Ruby, too. The most popular of these is the Swing widget toolkit. Swing provides a native look and feel for most platforms, and is naturally cross platform thanks to Java. You can read more about Swing and see screenshots at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_(Java). Monkeybars is a library that provides abstracted access to Swing from JRuby. It provides a DSL (domain-specific language) to put together GUI applications quickly. Its upsides are that its DSL is easy to understand (much of it is built around MVC principles) and that Monkeybars applications are not too tough to distribute on multiple platforms. The downside, however, is that you are definitely restricted to JRuby, with all of the pros and cons that that entails. Many people also don t like the relative slowness and clunkiness of Swing (compared to native interfaces), although it continues to improve over time. If you want to explore JRuby and Monkeybars further, the following resources should be of assistance: JRuby homepage (http://jruby.codehaus.org/): The homepage for the JRuby Ruby implementation. It s quite a dry, technical homepage overall, so use this primarily for getting to the download page! Monkeybars homepage (http://monkeybars.rubyforge.org/): The Monkeybars homepage, with links to examples (well worth checking out), downloads, and tutorials. Cross-Platform Development with JRuby and Swing (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/ library/j-monkeybars/index.html): An in-depth article about using JRuby and Monkeybars, by James Britt, an expert on Monkeybars. It includes sample code. Simple JRuby monkeybars example (http://github.com/martinbtt/simple-jrubymonkeybars-example/tree/master): A repository containing a basic example JRuby Monkeybars project. It includes instructions on how to get started using it.

Qt is a very popular cross-platform application development framework supported by Qt Software, a subsidiary of Nokia (but previously a separate company called Trolltech). Qt s level of reliability and quality has resulted in it being the bedrock for many popular applications, including Skype, Virtualbox, VLC, and Google Earth. QtRuby, then, is simply a set of Ruby bindings to the Qt framework. The obvious pro for QtRuby is that it s based upon a very well-established GUI development framework (thanks to the high level of commercial support it has had from Trolltech and now Nokia). The downside, however, is that QtRuby isn t particularly popular yet. Some issues of stability have popped up in the past, leading to poor takeup. Qt s growing popularity as a platform, however, ensures that this library will become of significant importance in the future sometime. QtRuby has been focused primarily on Qt 3 so far, despite the release of Qt 4 in 2005. A rewrite of QtRuby focused at Qt4 is underway, however, and appears to be active as of mid-2009. If you want to explore QtRuby further, the following resources should be of assistance: Qt homepage (http://www.qtsoftware.com/products): Homepage for the Qt product, featuring high-level information. QtRuby downloads (http://rubyforge.org/projects/korundum/): You can download the standard QtRuby and the Qt 4 focused QtRuby from this RubyForge repository. Qt 4 Tutorial for the Ruby Programming Language (http://www.darshancomputing.com/ qt4-qtruby-tutorial/): A well-written tutorial for implementing apps using Qt and QtRuby. Rapid GUI Development with QtRuby (http://www.pragprog.com/titles/ctrubyqt/ rapid-gui-development-with-qtruby): An e-book written by Caleb Tennis and published back in 1995 that covers how to build GUI apps in Ruby using QtRuby. It costs $8.50.

FXRuby is a Ruby library for developing GUI applications based upon the C++ FOX Toolkit (also known as just FOX). FOX s design goals were to have a lot of widgets available for developers to use and to be easy to use (from the perspective of C++ developers, of course). FXRuby is actively maintained by Lyle Johnson, with the latest version (at the time of writing) having been released in March 2009. The pros of FOX and FXRuby are that FOX offers a great native-looking (or pretty close, anyway) option for Windows and Linux-based developers. There s also a 200-page book by Lyle Johnson (and published by The Pragmatic Programmers) covering its use in detail. FXRuby is also very easy to install with; in most cases, just a single gem install command is required. FXRuby and FOX are stylistically the most similar to wxRuby and wxWidgets, despite having significantly different APIs. Both toolkits are aiming to provide a solid, cross-platform widget toolkit, and FXRuby and wxRuby are both Ruby interfaces to underlying C/C++ powered libraries.
