Charts are defined with an entity and used with that entity s views. Charts can be created for any custom entity as well as for the following system entities included in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Table 8-2 lists the entities available for charts.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM includes more than 50 charts for these entities. These native charts are available immediately, and you can use these charts as examples when creating your own. Analogous to views, fields, and forms, you access charts from the entity node of a solution, as shown in Figure 8-16. When creating charts as part of a solution, you have the ability to export them as part of your solution file and import them to other Microsoft Dynamics CRM systems.

8 Entity Customization: Views and Charts
Important The data included in a chart is based on the selected view, and some charts are only
useful with certain views. For instance, the Resolved Case Satisfaction chart will only be useful when the Case view shows resolved cases. If this chart is viewed for an open cases view, the chart will load, but the counts will likely be blank, based on the parameters defined for the chart. Using descriptive names for your charts helps alert users to the purpose of the chart.
Chart Properties
Like views, system administrators can modify charts. Figure 8-17 shows the properties of a chart.

The properties include:

Name and Description are self-explanatory. As a best practice, you should always provide a unique name and description for your chart to clarify the purpose of the chart. Your chart can be a funnel or a column, bar, line, or pie graph. Users can change these chart types when they view a chart. The chart type choices are located in the chart s ribbon menu. The axes are defined by the Legend Entries and their appropriate groupings as well as the Horizontal Access Label. For example, in the sales pipeline chart in Figure 8-17, the chart displays the sum of the Estimated Revenue field for each Pipeline Phase on the Opportunity entity. Two advanced options also exist when configuring a chart: the ability to specify a top or bottom number of records to apply to the chart. For instance, these properties would be useful if you wanted a chart to display the top 10 customers by order size or bottom three performing salespeople. Tip Because the advanced options are radio buttons, use the Clear link to remove an existing
advanced option selection.
Before finalizing your chart, you also can select a view to preview the chart and verify that the formatting and data references are correct.
Creating a Chart
Let s create your first chart. Just as with views, you can copy from an existing chart as a template. However, for this example, we ll create a chart from scratch.
Creating an Accounts By State chart
1. In the Default Solution window, expand the Entities node, and then expand the Account entity. 2. Click Charts under the Account entity in the navigation pane. 3. Click New to launch the New Chart form. 4. Enter Accounts By State for the name of the chart. 5. In the Legend Entries (Series) option, choose Account Name from the Select Field list. For the grouping, leave the default Count:All option selected. 6. Choose Address 1: State/Province for the Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels list.
8 Entity Customization: Views and Charts
7. In the Description field, enter Shows the number of accounts by their location. 8. Leave the default Column chart type in the ribbon.
9. Click Save & Close in the chart ribbon. 10. In the Default Solutions window, click Publish All Customizations on the toolbar to publish your new chart. Your chart is now ready for use and can also be exported as part of a solution file.
