Even though custom activities provide lots of design flexibility, we want to highlight some of the other constraints you should consider when trying to decide between creating a custom entity versus a custom activity:

You can t configure different security settings for different custom activities. All security access to activities in Microsoft Dynamics CRM (including the default activities and custom activities) is determined by the Activity entity on the security role editor. Therefore, you can t set up a custom activity and allow only a few users to create it. If a user had access to create any activity, she could create a custom activity. You can set up security on an entity-by-entity basis for custom entities. You cannot use custom activities as part of a quick campaign or create campaign activities with them. Custom activities cannot synchronize into a user s Outlook tasks the way that phone calls, letters, and tasks do.

You cannot restrict custom activities to be regarding a specific entity type. For example, in our Open House custom activity, users could set the regarding value of an Open House activity to any entity that allows activities. You cannot configure the Open House custom activity so that users can only set the regarding value to an apartment or building. Unlike custom entities, you cannot specify a primary field because all custom activities have a primary attribute named Subject. You can change the primary field of custom entities.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM includes many powerful features, but the ability to create custom entities, including custom activities, through a web-based administration tool ranks as one of the more important ones. By using custom entities, you can easily track additional types of information related to your customers. Custom entities behave almost exactly like the default system entities. Understanding how Microsoft Dynamics CRM structures entity relationships can help you design your system to ensure a smooth implementation. Custom activities are a special type of custom entity that allow you to create new activities that appear and function like the default system activities of phone calls, tasks, letters, emails, and faxes.

Another new feature in Microsoft Dynamics CRM provides you with the ability to deploy static or browser-processed files, including Silverlight, image files, JavaScript, and HTML web pages. This feature allows you to extend Microsoft Dynamics CRM in just a few installation steps with minimal impact to the deployment. This also means you can now deploy files directly to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online. This chapter discusses the options for web resources and how to apply them with your own solutions. Important In the process of describing web resources, we demonstrate using HTML, JavaScript,
and Silverlight, but an in-depth examination of these languages and the Microsoft Dynamics CRM SDK are beyond the scope of this book. Feel free to download the companion content files and use them in conjunction with the examples in this chapter.
