We often receive the request to translate a telephone number to a common format when helping customers implement Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Although the software does not include this functionality out of the box, a Script web resource can be used to accomplish the requirement. The script included in this section formats any 7- or 10-digit number as 555-1212 or (312) 555-1212. In addition, it translates a phone number entered as letters to their numeric equivalents. For example, if we enter a phone number of 866-555CODE, the script converts the letters in the phone number to (866) 555-2633. Figure 11-9 shows an example phone number entered by a user.

The script executes as soon as the user enters a value and the cursor exits the field referred to as losing focus or changing focus either because the user clicks elsewhere on the form or presses the Tab key. As it executes, the script first removes any special characters from the entered text. It then passes the first 10 characters of the modified text through a translation function that exchanges any letters for their equivalent phone digits. Finally, it formats the result with parentheses and a hyphen as appropriate, and then reassigns the new value to the field. To account for the possibility of people entering extensions, the script appends any characters beyond the tenth digit to the formatted result. Download the FormatPhoneNumber.js file from the companion content. Then, create and publish a Script web resource with this code. Finally, add a reference to the resource in the Form Properties on the Account entity. Figure 11-11 shows an example of the Script web resource associated to the Account entity. Figure 11-12 shows the Handler Properties dialog box for the Main Phone field s onChange event. In this case, you need to enable the Pass execution context as first parameter option on the Details tab, which allows you to create a generic script that can be applied to any field. Use the same approach with any of the other phone number fields onChange events.

Updating a Form Display Based on a Field Value
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 supports role-based forms, meaning you can change the fields that display on an entity form based on which security roles your users have. As you learned in 7, Entity Customization: Forms, you can create multiple forms for an entity and assign which Microsoft Dynamics CRM security roles have access to view the form. Further, 3, Managing Security and Information Access, taught you that Microsoft Dynamics CRM provides field-level security profiles, which are used to define which fields your users can view and update. However, both of these features have limitations. For instance, both features are limited to Microsoft Dynamics CRM security roles, and the field-level security profiles currently work only for custom fields. It s likely that you ll need to alter the tabs or fields that display on a form or change the requirement level of a field based on criteria beyond a user s security role. For example, you might want to make the Rating field on an opportunity required after an estimated close date has been entered. To satisfy this type of requirement, you can leverage the Microsoft Dynamics CRM SDK and a Script web resource. In previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, you accomplished this type of functionality using unsupported DOM techniques. Now with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, you have valid, supported method calls available! More Info Please refer to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 SDK for all of the supported
