After you rename the entity, you should also manually update the additional sections of Microsoft Dynamics CRM that reference the entity name so that the user interface remains consistent with the new name you assigned to the entity. The following additional updates are recommended when renaming an entity:

Rename the entity view names. For example, change Active Contacts to Active Clients. Update form labels that reference the old entity name. For example, on the Account form, change Primary Contact field to Primary Client. Update the form s Navigation labels. Change system messages as appropriate. Modify any reports that reference the entity name. Modifying reports is explained in 13, Reports and Dashboards.

After making these changes, remember to publish all of the entities you customized. Figure 5-9 shows how renaming the Contact entity as Client correctly updates the application navigation pane. We also renamed the My Active Contacts default view as My Active Clients to remain consistent with the new entity name.

An option set is list of data that includes a series of names and associated values stored as metadata within the application and displayed as a drop-down list in the user interface. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 introduces the concept of global option sets that can be used multiple times on an entity or shared across multiple entities. This additional functionality not only frees you from having to create the same option set multiple times for different entities which can become very tedious for longer option sets but also greatly reduces the issues that can arise when mapping option sets from one entity to another. Figure 5-10 shows the Connection Role Category option set created by Microsoft Dynamics CRM when an organization is created.

Client Extensions (Site Map and Ribbon)
Microsoft Dynamics CRM enables system administrators and programmers to extend the application s user interface. The site map and application ribbon are stored as XML files, making them customizable. And, unlike the other solution components available for customization, the site map and ribbon controls can only be customized by using an external editor, such as Visual Studio. Note Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 uses the ribbon in place of the ISV.Config feature from
previous versions of the software.
The site map controls the application areas and links in the left navigation pane of the main application window, as shown in Figure 5-11.
FIGURE 5-11 Application areas controlled by the site map
The ribbon definition is stored in three places, depending on which ribbon you wish to update. For updating the main application window s ribbon, you must update the Application Ribbons definition in a custom solution. For the ribbon associated with the entity grid, you update the ribbon in the entity. For form ribbons, you update the ribbon definition associated to a specific entity s form.
Part II Solutions
Microsoft Dynamics CRM only allows you to update the application ribbon by adding it to a custom solution. Using the site map solution we created earlier, we ll now add the application ribbon component to our custom solution.
Adding the Application Ribbons component to a solution
1. Navigate to the Settings area and click Solutions.
2. Double-click the Site Map Development solution you created earlier. If this solution doesn t exist, create a blank solution. 3. In the Solutions grid, click Add Existing and select Application Ribbons.
5 Solutions Overview and Concepts
4. Microsoft Dynamics CRM adds the Application Ribbons component to the solution components grid. Click Save and Close.
From here, you ll need to export the solution, manually update the resulting XML file for the application ribbon, and import the updated solution into Microsoft Dynamics CRM to view your changes. More Info We discuss exporting and importing solutions later in this chapter; more information
