Exercise 1: Capturing DHCP Lease Initialization Traffic
In this exercise, you release and then renew the IP configuration on Computer2 while Network Monitor is capturing traffic. You then stop, filter, and view the capture. 1. From Computer1, log on to Domain1 as Administrator. 2. Open Network Monitor. 3. Begin a capture in Network Monitor by clicking Start Capture. 4. From Computer2, log on to Domain1 as Administrator. 5. Open a command prompt. 6. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /release, and then press Enter. After a moment, an output indicates that the IP address of the computer is now 0.0.0.0. Computer2 is no longer communicating on the network. 7. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /renew, and then press Enter. 8. When the command produces an output, switch to Computer1. 9. On Computer1, stop the network capture in Network Monitor by clicking Stop And View Capture. 10. From the Display menu in Network Monitor, select Filter. The Display Filter dialog box opens. 11. Double-click the expression Protocol = = Any. The Expression dialog box opens. 12. Click Disable All. All of the protocols move to the Disabled Protocols area. 13. In the Disabled Protocols area, find and double-click the DHCP protocol. The DHCP protocol moves to the Enabled Protocols area. 14. Click OK.

15. In the Display Filter dialog box, click OK. The Frame Viewer window of Network Monitor should now display only five DHCP frames. 16. Save the capture to the My Captures folder with the filename DHCP Lease Initializa tion. Before saving, be sure to select the Filtered check box in the Save As dialog box. 17. Close Network Monitor. Do not save the capture again.
Exercise 2: Analyzing the Lease Initialization Capture
In this exercise, you analyze the five DHCP frames captured in the DHCP Lease Initial ization file. 1. From Computer1, while you are logged on to Domain1 as Administrator, doubleclick the DHCP Lease Initialization file in the My Captures folder. The capture opens in Network Monitor. 2. Answer the following questions in the spaces provided: a. What are the names of the five DHCP messages Write them in sequence, as indicated by the contents of the description field for each frame.

In this exercise, you capture traffic from a DHCP lease renewal. 1. If you have not already done so, from Computer1, log on to Domain1 as Administrator. 2. Open Network Monitor. 3. Start a capture by clicking Start Capture. 4. Switch to Computer2. Unlock Computer2 if necessary by re-entering the DOMAIN1\administrator credentials 5. At a command prompt, type ipconfig /renew, and then press Enter. After a few moments, an output displays the newly refreshed IP configuration. 6. Switch to Computer1. 7. In Network Monitor, stop the capture by clicking Stop And View Capture. 8. Using the process described in Exercise 1, Capturing DHCP Lease Initialization Traffic, filter the capture to display only DHCP frames.
