Windows Update is used to download such items as security fixes, critical updates, the latest help files, drivers, and Internet products. New content is added to the site regu larly, so you can always get the most recent updates. You can configure Windows Update so that you can access the Windows Update Catalog. This strategy lets you select updates that you plan to deploy later, and is of particular use to someone who administers a number of machines. Automatic Updates is built into Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. It enables the operating system to automatically download and install critical updates from the Windows Update site. Windows Update and Automatic Updates are two separate components designed to work together to keep Windows secure. You have full control over the level of this interaction. For example, you can choose to automatically download and install updates as they become available, or you can be notified when new updates become available. Software Update Services (SUS) lets you download a limited version of the Windows Update site and distribute updates to clients through Automatic Updates. As a result, you can control how and when updates are deployed, and deliver updates to users through your intranet and inside your firewall. Running legacy programs on Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server or Professional typically requires that you modify the system set tings that allow members of the Power Users group to run these programs. These same permissions also make it possible for Power Users to gain additional privileges on the system. Therefore, you should deploy applications that belong to the Windows Logo Program for Software. These programs can run successfully under the secure configuration that is provided by the Users group. The other problem associated with legacy considerations occurs when clients with leg acy operating systems need to have software installed and updated. If a client cannot access Active Directory, it cannot be updated through Group Policy. The Active Direc tory Client Extensions pack allows legacy systems to access Active Directory and make use of Group Policy. You must be familiar with all of these facilities for the examination.
