The primary DNS suffix is the suffix that, when added to the client host name, forms the full computer name. When a connection-specific DNS suffix is added to a DNS computer or host name, an FQDN is assigned to a specific adapter on the computer. This suffix can be configured on the DNS tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box. When queries are submitted for unqualified names, the DNS Client service by default first adds the primary DNS suffix to the unqualified name and then submits a query for this name. If that strategy does not work, the DNS Client service then adds any connection-specific suffixes to the name and submits this new query. If that strategy does not work, the DNS Client service then adds the parent suffix of the primary DNS suffix to the name and submits this final query.

By default, DNS clients running Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 attempt to dynamically register and update their resource records in DNS. Clients assigned a static IP address attempt to update both A and PTR resource records. Clients assigned an IP address through DHCP attempt to update only A resource records, and the PTR resource record update is performed by the DHCP server. To force a DNS client to attempt dynamic registration, use the Ipconfig /registerdns command (or restart the computer). To view the DNS client cache, enter ipconfig /displaydns at a command prompt. To flush the DNS client cache, enter ipconfig /flushdns at a command prompt.

3. Northwind Traders wants to open a satellite office in Burlington, but it does not want this new office to host any zones. The satellite office users are expected to use the Internet heavily for marketing and research. What can you do to improve DNS name resolution for users in this satellite office
Troubleshooting Lab
In the following lab, you troubleshoot name resolution on Computer1 and Computer2. 1. Log on to Computer1 as Administrator. 2. Open a command prompt and enter the command nbtstat R. 3. At the command prompt, enter the command ping computer2. The ping attempt is successful. 4. Use the procedure named To disable WINS/NetBIOS name resolution in Lesson 1 to disable NetBIOS for the local area connection on Computer1. 5. Open a command prompt and type the command nbtstat R. 6. At the command prompt, enter ping computer2. The ping attempt is not successful. 7. At the command prompt, enter ping computer2.domain1.local. The ping attempt is not successful. 8. Answer the following question: Given that the DNS server is configured on Computer1, why are you unable to ping computer2.domain1.local
9. Open a new command prompt by clicking Start, pointing to All Programs, point ing to Windows Support Tools, and clicking Command Prompt. At the Support Tools command prompt, enter dnscmd . /Config ..AllZones /AllowUpdate 1. This command enables dynamic updates on all zones hosted by the local DNS server. 10. Log on to Computer2 as Administrator. 11. On Computer2, on the DNS tab in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box for the local area connection, select the Use This Connection s DNS Suffix In DNS Registration check box. Click OK twice, and then click Close. 12. Open a new command prompt on Computer2 and enter ipconfig /registerdns.
