To insert a picture object that s available as a file into an Excel 2007 worksheet, enable the Insert tab in the Ribbon and click the Picture command button in the Illustrations group . In the dialog box that subsequently appears, find and select the file, and paste it into the worksheet . The picture object is then highlighted, and you can position, scale, or duplicate it . However, the range of design options and commands will be completely different if you click the object and then display the Picture Tools with its Format tab in the Ribbon . In earlier versions of Microsoft Office, commands for adjusting picture objects were placed in the Picture toolbar . If you were familiar with the tools available there, you ll also be able to get good results quickly with the Picture Tools of Excel 2007 . The next list of tools follows the numbering in Figure 5-24 .

1. Brightness: You can change the brightness with an increment of 10 percent to a span from minus 40 percent to plus 40 percent by clicking the icons . If you want to define it in more detail, you can use the Picture Corrections Options command to go to a formatting dialog box and continuously change the brightness along a range of minus 100 percent to plus 100 percent . 2. Contrast: The options for changing the contrast correspond to the specifications made for the brightness under number 1 . 3. Recolor: You ll find several options here to color a picture in monochrome . Therefore, not only can you change a color picture into a grayscale picture as you could in earlier versions of Microsoft Office, but you can also apply all other colors accordingly as a uniform color . In addition to four color modes, several Dark or Light Variations are also available as integrated specifications . However, you can also use the More Variations command to use all available colors for this formatting purpose . I ll discuss the Set Transparent Color command under number 7 later . Note In presentations, monochrome pictures can sometimes be much more appealing than pictures in original colors . Use the effect if you want to tone down a color effect that s too strong or even flashy or if you want to adjust the entire picture of a specific coloring (for example, of a corporate design) . The results are often considerably better than they would be if you tried to reduce brightness and/or contrast to achieve similar results . 4. Compress Pictures: This command enables you to reduce the space requirements of inserted pictures with the support of dialogs . 5. Change Picture: You use the Insert Graphic dialog box to replace a selected picture object with another picture object . 6. Reset Picture: With a single click of the mouse, you can undo all changes previously made to this picture in Excel . You therefore all but reproduce the original state . Note The influences on picture objects described here and in the following sections concern formatting, not changes . This means that the object itself doesn t change, just its appearance . This therefore has the same character as the formatting of e .g . the number 12345, which can appear in many different versions and variations in its table cell (different colors and sizes, with or without decimal places and separators, with text supplements, as a date, as text, and so on), but which is never anything other than the number 12345 .
