In terms of formatting, very few words should be used in the orientation of a numbers-based chart . Let s assume that the landscape orientation is used for most chart layouts . Generally, the portrait orientation is used only for bar charts with extensive data series . The two large areas of the chart, chart area and the plot area, are very important in terms of layout .

Does it look good Does it look interesting Is it, in the best sense of the word, pleasing Are the visually distinguishable margins and areas in harmony with each other and appealing to the eye Is the arrangement clear In terms of content, do all of the important individual elements look good, and are they displayed in such a way that reflects their importance Is the size of the plot area appropriate to its content (the content density)

One of the most interesting phenomena associated with human behavior is the pronounced tendency to conserve one s energy (you could also call this nature s law of convenience ) . On a more serious note: if you have a chart that fills the screen or projection screen, you can only expect its observers to move their eyes back and forth without complaint if the chart contains enough information to make this extra effort worthwhile . If observers see very little, despite having made the effort to move their eyes back and forth, they will (generally subconsciously) feel inconvenienced . A word of warning: do not create unnecessarily large plot areas for charts .

The margin between the chart area and the row and column headings (hidden during the presentation) is neither too wide nor too narrow . Even wider would be acceptable, but narrower would have a tendency to look squashed . The width/height relationship is different for the chart area than for the plot area . Such differences help prevent bland uniformity, which quickly becomes the case with completely symmetrical compositions .

What, For Whom, How, and With What
The suspense created by asymmetry is further strengthened by moving the plot area within the chart area down a little and to the left and therefore away from the imaginary center axes .
Observe the following basic rule: symmetrical proportions are stylish, but can quickly appear to be bland, whereas unusual proportions spark interest, but can quickly appear contrived and artificial if they are overdone .
Dimensions
You rarely need to worry about half an inch when creating presentations to be shown on screen or using a video projector . However, this does not mean that you can disregard the exact dimensions in the rectangular chart element . The width/height relationship is extremely important for an aesthetically pleasing first impression as well as for dealing with later considerations . The next few sections provide some brief information about two systems that you can use as the basis for good proportions . The golden section (also known as the golden ratio or divine proportion ) is a mathematical width-to-height division ratio of 1 to 1 .618 (rounded off) that has been used and loved since the Renaissance by many European artists as a basis for their harmonious designs . The fact that it also concerns an ideal proportion frequently found in nature was proven 800 years ago . Nowadays, the proportions of the standardized paper sizes for layouts, e .g . letter or A4 (ISO 216), also play a very large role, and not just in print products . Of course, when determining dimensions or gaps, it is generally OK to disregard the positions after a decimal point for both systems . To observe the golden section as 1 .61803398874989 48482045868343656 would be excessive . However, if you adhere to the rounded versions of these systems (5:8 for the golden section and 5:7 for ISO 216), you will always produce harmonious images . In saying that, however, we should remember that unusual proportions arouse interest . Therefore, do not shy away from other dimensions . Even a dimension whose shape and formation appears to be cumbersome, angular, crooked, or even offputting can, after having attracted attention or even caused irritation, reveal its charms and have the desired effect . Many successful marketing campaigns adopt this idea . If you want to measure a product or its elements in accordance with exact specifications, such as aspect ratios, you may find the content of the file Shapes_Measurements.xlsx helpful . On the Companion CD The file Shapes_Measurements.xlsx is contained in the \Materials
