In addition to dimensions, the brightness levels of an area are important for that first impression . Once again, we will discuss this in the context of Figure 6-13:

background as well as an impression of depth, even in two-dimensional objects . For this purpose, the entire background should be darker than any other area on screen (dark implies far away) . Never present charts on a screen or with the use of a projector without having an immediately discernible background . If a background has a weak color or is completely colorless, observers first have to realize that this is actually the background . This takes time and effort!

The brighter chart area sets itself apart from the background, but it is not imposing . It nevertheless gives the desired impression of being a supporting element . The very bright plot area and the figures displayed there draw us in . This is what it s all about . The observer does not have to find anything himself . Instead, he is guided to the most important area .

In the first main section of 4, Colors, Areas, and Outlines, you learned essential information about colors and color selections . Here are a few notes in relation to assigning colors to areas:
6
What, For Whom, How, and With What
Generally, dark blue is a good background color for presentations that take place in darkly lit rooms while white is a poor background color for video presentations . Avoid choosing very saturated colors as background colors . Warm colors (from the red, yellow, or green palette) leave a pleasant overall impression, but they can be intrusive . Do not choose warm colors for area designs . Instead, choose them when you want to make some details stand out . Alternatively, add warm spots of color to cold area designs (blue, violet, gray) if you want to achieve a friendlier overall effect . Because objects with warm colors appear to be closer than those with cold colors, never use them for background designs . Dark colors are "weightier" than bright colors . You can take this meaning literally, especially if you use color fills . If you create vertical color gradients in areas, you should generally ensure that the colors brighten as they rise . If you create horizontal structures in areas, you should ensure that they brighten as they travel from left to right . Multi-colored charts look ridiculous, which is fine if you want your chart to have the fun element associated with a country fair or circus . In that case, reach deep into your pot of paint and use a thick brush to apply it with broad strokes! Otherwise, I strongly recommend that you use carefully prepared palettes with caution and consideration .
