A map of Europe was inserted (\Materials\Pictures\Europe01.tif ) . Then, the white color was removed (Picture Tools/Customize/Recolor/Set Transparent Color) . Subsequently, the map was cropped a little and then positioned in the required relation to the plot area . The marker ring in the middle of Spain is the inserted and formatted basic shape called Donut . The title at the lower border of the chart picture is a borderless WordArt object with a transparent area .

After you ve created a secondary value axis, you can also define a second category axis for a chart . There are two primary reasons:

The chart is either exceptionally high or exceptionally wide (for bar charts) and a second data label on the opposite side facilitates the perception and assessment of the categories . You use a secondary category axis and define its axis options (intervals, interval units) differently from those of the primary category axis . You then apply separate major gridlines (Chart Tools/Layout/Gridlines) for each axis; this results in two major gridlines that run in the same direction (and partly overlay) but can be formatted separately .

Figure 8-31 shows how you can use the latter scenario . Note In reference to Figure 8-31, I want to apologize for the fact that the linguistic chaos prevalent in Excel 2007 doesn t make it easier to use the program . Terms like gridlines of the secondary category axis or gridlines of the second category axis would be clear and you would be able to click the correct entry after a moment s consideration whether the lines are vertical (for example, in column charts) or horizontal (in bar charts) .

And Horizontal (Category) Axis means the same as the Horizontal Primary Axis command in the same tab of the Ribbon . But you can t ignore the confusing labels from the Chart Tools/Layout/Chart Elements menu completely, because you sometimes need to select elements that you can t see because of an overlay . Elements that can t be accessed or aren t visible using the mouse or keyboard can be opened via these menu commands .
Charts with Secondary Axes
Figure 8-31 Differently scaled gridlines with two existing category axes
How was the result shown in Figure 8-31 defined Would you like to try it out yourself Then proceed as follows: 1. A chart with more than one data series and a horizontal category axis that is positioned at the bottom by default was created; for example, a column or line chart . 2. In this chart, a second value axis was defined (the secondary vertical axis) . 3. The major gridlines of the primary horizontal axis and consequently the vertical gridlines of the plot area have been displayed . 4. The primary horizontal axis (i .e ., the first category axis) was positioned above the upper edge of the plot area by setting the Axis Labels: High option . 5. Now, a secondary horizontal axis (a second category axis) was created under Chart Tools/Axes . The two category axes were positioned above the plot area: the first one directly on its edge and the second above the first . 6. The second category axis was set to Interval between tick marks: 3 and Specify interval unit: 3 and consequently has a scaling that is less detailed than the first category axis: the first one has a monthly tiling, the second one a quarter tiling . 7. Major gridlines were created for the second category axis (the one with the quarter tiling) . Thus, there were two major gridlines with vertical, partly overlaying gridlines . 8. The first one of these major gridlines (monthly tiling) was selected via Chart Tools/ Layout/Current Selection/Chart Elements and formatted slightly . Then, the second major gridline (quarter tiling) was selected and formatted with bright lines . 9. Finally, the second category axis (the secondary horizontal axis) was hidden .
