Many charts try to present a measured quality reflecting whatever the basis or goals may be . Most of these charts, however, don t indicate the actual informational value of this quality through a comprehensible specification of the quantity (the number of measurement results, for example) . In some cases, you think hard about the reasons for omitting these values . The two charts of the QQ 1 and QQ 2 worksheets, however, clearly indentify the relations between quantity and quality . In other words, this single-point chart displays the quality and indicates how well the measured data supports the result . Possible test results can be simulated here by using the ScrollBars . You can move the markerpoint in all directions . In the real version of this model, the data was normalized in an evaluation system of 100 points . That means there were 100 quantity points and 100 quality points for each test result .

and movable QQ point is connected with the zero point . A blue line is set between these two points that acts as a pointer and a measuring tape . Measurement starts here: that s the distance; that s how good the result is . The more the shared marker moves to the right, the greater the quantity . The more it moves to the top, the better the quality . The possible optimum (the longest distance starting from zero) is X = 100 and Y = 100 . In the QQ 2 worksheet, the same model has been edited with a considerably higher effort . Here are some tips (supported by Figure 8-40):

Both types of controls (form controls and ActiveX controls) are used in one worksheet . The connecting line between the zero point and the marker can be displayed and hidden . If it is hidden, the relevant zero values are not displayed in the table and the #N/A values that are available instead remain invisible (conditional formatting) . The =ISNA(reference) function checks whether the value #N/A is in the reference and reacts with TRUE or FALSE .

The greenest green belongs to the top right corner of the plot area . It was essential for the assignment of the colors that high quality or high quantity alone is not sufficient for the positioning in a green area . Note the color gradient of the yellow quarter ring between 80 and 80 . The color formatting of the plot area is mirrored parallel to the axis labels in the text boxes . The bottom left corner of the chart contains two WordArt elements . When you ve worked through this and all subsequent chapters, you ll soon be master of the greenest green .

Dynamic Chart Formatting and Other Tricks
In Microsoft Excel, there are integrated formats, user-defined formats, and conditional formats . Your Excel may also include what I call dynamic chart formats . In addition to reading changing content via controls, as already seen, you can also base the formal design of specific chart elements on changing content . This is mostly what I ll discuss in this chapter . Minor examples were already introduced in 8, Chart Types Conventional and Exceptional: There I introduced the cheating concept (legitimately and only in the interest of the target group): using hidden data and formulas with elements that are only sometimes visible is one of the most effective options in Excel s bag of tricks . The files for this chapter that are available on the CD-ROM are mainly designed to be used for dynamic models; that is, for manually controllable data content of your charts . However, you can also easily implement most of the information provided here in static charts, adapted if required . Once again, you can explore numerous formatting variants . I choose the term explore because this chapter doesn t describe design effects that have been used multiple times or only describes them with keywords . Therefore, you should select elements you re interested in and check their settings in the corresponding formatting dialog box . Note If you note that an element formatting in the formatting dialog box is set to Automatic, either an integrated style has been defined or the formatting is the result of a conversion; that is, Excel 2007 has converted the file from an older file format .
