with one another almost automatically . However, if you investigate this matter a little further, you ll find that it s a little more complex and problematic . For example:

Word can also be used as a very effective, high-quality design program . Here I m thinking in particular of the variable options available with Word tables . Excel is also in a class of its own when it comes to presentation . This is true in particular of the dynamic, multi-variable presentations that don't use any programming, which have been discussed in detail in this book . The latest versions of PowerPoint can also be used in some respects as a graphics program . This is possible because you can save objects and even entire slides in various graphics file formats in the presentation program .

For these reasons, it's not always easy to select which program to use for a certain project, or to decide whether to combine the strengths of the individual Office components in an optimized product . Despite significant advances made, this last option remains something of a pipe dream in Office 2007 because the programs have unfortunately not yet reached a point where you can simply jump between them, or choose among them at random without noticing a difference . However, I do have some good news to report . If you already know how to create attractive and informative charts in Excel 2007, you won't have a problem doing the same in Word 2007 or PowerPoint 2007 because both these Office programs now use Excel, including all of its resources, as a chart editor . This means, for example, that everything you've learned in this book about the formal design of charts in Excel 2007 can equally be applied in its two sister programs . Now for the not-so-good news . It's a shame that the strengths of Excel can't be perfectly combined with the strengths of PowerPoint because such a capability is badly needed . Instead, if you want to present figures, you can either used a non-programmed yet extremely dynamic, clearly laid out Excel solution and employ a few tricks to lend it some additional features of a PowerPoint presentation . Or, you can use the same data to produce a largely static and because of the number of slides required very complicated PowerPoint solution, which you can only make as dynamic as its Excel equivalent by spending a lot of time (and therefore money) on programming . Sadly, you still can't use an ideal combination of the best resources in each program or fully synchronize these with a minimum of effort . In terms of the strategic and technical aspects of the interaction between Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, there are no differences significant enough to warrant a detailed discussion of any of these programs in their roles as source or target programs . It's sufficient to look at just one example of this, which I've provided here in relation to the transfer of charts from Excel to PowerPoint . The rules are essentially the same for any other program combinations and directions of transfer .

It seems that PowerPoint has now fallen in love with Excel . One practical example of this is shown in Figure 12-14 and discussed in the following paragraphs:

You re using PowerPoint and want to create a chart . To do this, you choose Insert/ Illustrations/Chart. Once you select a chart type, the screen is split in two . One half continues to display the chart in PowerPoint, while Excel opens in the other half, showing a chart basis in a table . You can now change this chart basis as required in order to add the relevant content to your PowerPoint/Excel chart . The chart is fully integrated into PowerPoint, where it can be manipulated without any restrictions using the same chart tools and techniques available in Excel (note, however, that this is limited to formal design and doesn t include the use of dynamic components like controls) . The chart you created remains embedded in PowerPoint, while its source data is saved in an Excel worksheet that is integrated into PowerPoint . To change this source data, right-click in the chart to open the context menu, and choose the Edit Data option to open the integrated Excel worksheet .
