1. Click the Office Button, followed by Customize . 2. In the Choose commands from dialog box, select the All Commands option to obtain a complete, alphabetically arranged overview of each command button, which you can transfer to the toolbar . Alphabetically choose a command that you want to be a component of the toolbar and then click the Add button . This transfers the command to the picklist on the right . You don t have to worry about a logical or an ergonomic layout yet because you ll be able to change the positions as you wish later . Keep doing this until you have compiled your required set of commands . Also remember to add some separators so that you ll be able to create clearly arranged groupings in the toolbar at a later stage . (Separators are vertical lines . The <Separator> entry is located at the very top of the alphabetical list .) 3. Now select the transferred command buttons or separators one by one and move them to the required position using the two arrow buttons . 4. If you want to remove a command button or separator, select it from the dialog box list on the right and click the Remove button .

Here you ll find a list of add-ins that are currently installed and available . The AddIn Manager was previously used to manage (for example, add or remove) add-ins . You can access the familiar dialog box by selecting the Excel Add-ins option from under Manage: and then clicking the Go button . You don t require specific Excel add-ins when working with this book because some of the formulas only made available by add-in in early versions are now contained in the default formula option .

The Ribbon
Experienced users will naturally miss the menu structures and toolbars from earlier program versions . Many users also have gotten used to using task panes, but even these are still only sparsely available . Because there is no possibiltiy to return to earlier designs of the user interface in Excel 2007, it s important that you get used to the new specifications quickly . This is also essential when dealing with this book, where I will use the terms introduced in the following paragraphs in other chapters for all explanations and instructions . First, let s look at the structure of the Ribbon as displayed in Figure 1-16:
Excel 2007: New Look New Structures
Figure 1-16 Tabs (1), groups (2) and command buttons (3)
1. Like the menu titles in earlier versions, the titles of task-oriented tabs appear at the top of the screen . When you click one of these titles, a list of command buttons appears classified by group . 2. The groups are visually separate from each other and have a text description at the bottom that attempts to describe the task complex represented by the group . 3. Some of you switching to the new version will be familiar with several of the command buttons, while others will first need to familiarize yourselves with them . Allow yourself time to do this and check out what will and won t work . Dealing with this structure requires familiarization because quite a few assignments do not necessarily appear logical and a sequence of commands that functions in accordance with ergonomic rules is only partly possible . This is mainly because, in particular with the design tasks frequently addressed in this book, you have to search for several commands in different parts of a tab that are relatively far removed from each other or are on different tabs . After the first few months working with Excel 2007, I still don t know why it would be better or easier to process wide and horizontal structures and graphically designed structures instead of compact, vertically-oriented lists with text entries . Those of you, who do not use command buttons for certain task complexes, but instead consistently work with the complex dialog boxes, may be glad that at least some of these dialog boxes still exist . In terms of type and content, they also don t differ greatly from the previous familiar structures and will therefore be a pleasant transitional aid for many Excel 2007 users . An example of how you access these conservative dialog boxes is shown in Figure 1-17:
