Figure 12.4 The customized template in Microsoft Producer. Customizing a Presentation Template Customizing Microsoft Producer templates lets you determine the appearance and layout of a presentation when a template you customize is applied to a presentation. Incorrectly editing a Producer presentation template file and then including it in a presentation may cause your presentation to play back or display incorrectly. In other words, be careful when editing presentation templates. The steps in this chapter that show you how to customize a template include changing values that can be safely modified. It is strongly recommended that you stick to editing

Page 255 only these values. This chapter provides information and guidelines about which values in certain selectors can be safely changed. Additionally, Microsoft Producer Help provides a listing of the selector properties that can be safely edited, as well as the syntax for adding the CSS code with the possible values. A sample presentation was created using the following step-by-step instructions for creating the customized presentation template that displays video. You can watch this presentation by opening the file \Samples\12\ContosoSampleTemplate.htm on the companion CD. Customizing Background Images Customizing your presentation template can begin with editing the background image. The image needs to be Web-safe that is, it can be viewed in a Web browser, such as PNG, JPG, or GIF image files. A majority of popular graphics editing programs today, including Microsoft Paint, let you save images in one or both of these Web formats. The first step in adding a background image is to determine its size. In doing so, you should think about the resolution settings for the computer monitors your audience will be using to watch your presentation. For example, if a majority of users in your company or organization have monitors set to display 1024 768 pixels, you would then want to use images that will accommodate this screen resolution. The goal is to have the image fill the window of the Web browser while minimizing the amount of scrolling your audience would need to do when watching your presentation. Remember, even though your audience may have their screen resolution set to something like 1024 768, this entire area is not available for you to display your image because of the other items that appear in the Web browser window: a menu bar, toolbars, address bar, horizontal and vertical scroll bars, and possibly a status bar. A quick way to estimate the correct size for the image is to take a screen shot of the Web browser window (with the screen set to your best estimate of your audience s screen resolution and with the window maximized). Step-by-Step: Estimating Background Image Size The following procedure describes the process for capturing an image of your computer screen to determine the appropriate size for a background image. 1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, maximize the browser window, and then open a Web page. 2. Press the Print Screen key to capture an image of the screen with the current Web content displayed in the browser window. 3. Open a graphics editing program, such as Microsoft Paint. 4. On the Edit menu, click Paste to insert the screen shot.
