Page 78 For recording video where your subject is rather stationary, such as video for a talking head presentation, a tripod can be invaluable because it enables you to focus the video camera on the speaker without worrying about your arm moving and disrupting the quality of the recorded video. In addition, many tripods have a swivel head or some rotation device that allows you to smoothly rotate the camera to follow a moving subject. When buying a tripod, consider weight and portability. Many tripods are lightweight, which can make a big difference, especially if you plan on recording your video in a number of places. A lighter tripod is much easier to transport. Furthermore, many tripods today fold up, which helps to reduce its size during transport. An alternative to a tripod is a monopod. As the name suggests, a monopod has only one leg. A monopod is lighter and more portable than a tripod. You might have seen a monopod used on television by sideline photographers at a sporting event or by a nature photographer. Because the monopod only has one leg, you still need to balance and stabilize the video camera when using the monopod to record. However, the monopod is still a good alternative because you aren t required to hold the camera completely still. Monopods are often used because they are easy to move from one spot to another. Because they are smaller and more portable than tripods, a monopod is easier to transport, especially if you have to walk a distance to get to the recording location, as is often the case with nature photographers. If you are recording in a crowded area, a monopod is a better choice than a tripod because it is easier to set up, take down, and it takes up less space while filming. Extra Videotape A common annoyance during a recording session is running out of videotape. On a video shoot, this can tremendously slow, if not stop, the recording process. However, this problem is easily avoidable if you remember to bring extra videotapes for your camera. External Microphone As mentioned in the previous chapter, video cameras and some Web cameras have built-in microphones. However, the quality of audio that is recorded with the camera s microphone is not always the best possible audio you can record. Many cameras contain a connector for an external microphone. If you use a camera like this, you can use an external microphone and attach it to your camera when recording. The two basic kinds of microphones are handheld microphones and lavaliere microphones. A lavaliere microphone, which attaches to the speaker s clothing, is especially useful because it is closer to the speaker and records better quality audio than the built-in microphone. Figure 5.1 shows and example of a lavaliere microphone. If you are planning on recording video for talking head presentations especially, a lavaliere microphone is a good choice because the microphone attaches to clothing, such as a tie or shirt, and can be easily hidden.

Figure 5.1 Presenter with a lavaliere microphone. Headphones Many cameras also include a built-in headphone jack so you can hear the audio in your video, during recording, by listening through the headphones. If you review the recorded video on the camera, the headphones enable you to hear the audio more clearly than you would while listening to the audio through the small speaker on your video camera. Headphones that cover the whole ear are especially useful because they block out external noises. By listening to the audio immediately at the recording location, you can determine whether it has been recorded well enough for your presentation. If it isn t recorded correctly, you can do the recording again. Camera Bag As your collection of recording accessories grows, you will need to find a way to keep all these accessories together. A good basic accessory is a video camera bag or case that is small enough to carry, but that has a lot of pockets and storage room. In addition to providing extra storage room, a video camera case or bag will also protect your camera when you move it from one place to another. Many camera cases and bags have built-in padding to protect the camera from damage. Furthermore, a camera bag will
