Page 164 Windows Media video files. Clips are created based on file markers that are automatically inserted in Windows Media files. For example, as discussed in chapter 8, when you narrate slides using video with audio, the video is automatically broken down into smaller clips that correspond to the timings of the slides on the Slide track. The clips were created using markers that were added to the video file when slide changes were inserted. This applies to all Windows Media video files that have a .wmv or .asf file name extension. If file markers do not appear in the Windows Media file, then clips are created the same way as with video from an analog video source. Video from an analog video camera or Web camera. Video from an analog source is separated into clips based on changes in the video. When Producer detects a new frame of video, a new clip is created. For example, if you focus the camera on your speaker and then abruptly change the focus of the camera to a computer in the office, a new clip is created at that point, because there is a significant change in the video content. Video from a DV camera. When you use a DV camera to record video, the DV camera inserts time stamps into the video. In Producer, clips are created based on these time stamps. You can also create clips from video files after selecting them in the contents pane. Using this method, clips are created in the same way as when you select analog or Web camera video files from the tree pane, or when the video source is an analog video camera or Web camera. In other words, clips are created based on significant changes in the video file, regardless of the video source. When you run Create Clips from the contents pane, the clips are separated and named according to the original file name followed by an incremented number (in parentheses) that indicates the order in which the clip appeared in the original video file. For example, if you created clips from a video file named Speaker.wmv in the contents pane, the resulting clips would be created in the contents pane and named Speaker.wmv (2), Speaker.wmv (3), and so forth. Determining Where Files Are Added on the Timeline By default, digital media files are added to the beginning of the timeline when the timeline is empty. However, there may be times when you want to add video or still images to the Video track or audio to the Audio 2 track of the timeline so they display at a different time. You can do this by copying a file or clip from the Media tab, and then pasting it in the appropriate track of the timeline at the time you want, based on the position of the time indicator. In Producer, a digital media file is added by default to its associated track on the timeline. Which track the content appears on by default depends on the file type and the track that is selected when the file is added to the timeline.

Page 165 The digital media types and the tracks to which they are added by default are shown in Table 9.1. Table 9.1 Default timeline tracks for various file types. Digital media type Default timeline track Video Video Audio track of a video file Audio Audio (not part of a video file) Audio 2 Images Slide Slides Slide HTML HTML Presentation template Template Video transition Transition Video effect Video In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can choose to save your slides as a Web page. If you do this, you can use the PowerPoint presentation (with an .htm file name extension in this case) in your Producer project. Although the PowerPoint presentation and the individual slides have .htm file name extensions, the slides are still added to the Slide track by default and stored in the Slides folder of the current project. You can add some digital media file types to tracks other than the default ones, depending on how you want to use that type of digital media for your presentation. For example, you might have a video file that contains accompanying audio in it, and you only want the audio to play back in your presentation without displaying the video. To do this, you could add the video file to the Audio 2 track of the timeline rather than to the Video track. In your final presentation, the audio would play back, but the video portion of the file would not. Table 9.2 shows which types of digital media files can be added to more than one timeline track.
