You use the .append() function to insert HTML at the end of a found element. jQuery will append your HTML as the last child item of the found element. This code finds <h2/> elements and then appends a hyperlink at the end of the <h2/> content.

The .detach() function removes the found elements from the DOM. This sample code finds the <div/> tag with the div1 ID and removes it and its contents. Note that .detach() is similar to .remove(). detach() keeps the removed items around in case you intend to reinsert them somewhere else. The .remove() method removes the items altogether. (continued)

$(document).height();
You use the .height() function when you need the pixel value of the height of something (typically to calculate layout spacing). This code finds the height of the entire document. jQuery includes similar functions for .width(), .innerHeight(), .innerWidth(), .outerHeight(), and .outerWidth().
$("#div1").after($("#div2"));
The .after() method allows you to insert content after a found item (or set of items). You can also use it to insert one found item after another (as in the example). This code finds the <div/> tag with the ID of div2 and inserts it after the found <div/> tag with the ID of div1. jQuery includes similar functions called .before(), .insertAfter(), and .insertBefore().
$("h2").replaceWith ("<h1>Page Title</h1>");
The .replaceWith() method removes content from the DOM and replaces it with something else. This sample code finds all <h2/> tags on the page and removes them. It then puts the provided content in place of these tags. Note that it replaces the entire group of tags with just a single instance of the provided content.
$("h2").wrapInner( "<span class='pageTitle' />");
The .wrapInner() function wraps HTML content around the content of selected elements. In this example, the <span/> tag is wrapped around the content contained between any found <h2/> tags. jQuery provides similar functions called .wrap(), .wrapAll(), and .unwrap().
Handling Client-Side Events
The jQuery language allows you to bind scripts to client-side events such as button clicks, mouse movement, and keyboard interaction. These scripts can be written in separate .js files or within the page. They are then bound to events by using the jQuery .bind() method. There is no need to add markup to the page to do this binding. This ensures a clean separation between your markup and your client-side code.
ChAPTER 9
Working with Client-Side Scripting, AJAX, and jQuery
As an example, suppose you are creating a page that searches for employees based on their ID. This page might include a text box and a search button, as in the following markup (which uses a master page).
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" Runat="Server"> <h2>Employee Search</h2> <hr /> Enter Employee ID <br /> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBoxEmpId" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>  <span id="msgValidEmpId" style="color: Red">*</span> <br /> <input type="button" id="ButtonSearch" runat="server" value="Search" /> </asp:Content>
You may want to bind code to the click event of the input button. The event code might then validate the user s input and, if it is valid, contact the server for search data. You could add the following jQuery code to your page to set up this binding.
<script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $("#MainContent_ButtonSearch").click(validateEmpId); }); </script>
Note that this code uses the .click() method to define a binding to the validateEmpId JavaScript function. The .click() method is a shortcut. You could also call .bind("click", "validateEmpId"). The code inside validateEmpId might also use jQuery to find the user s input, validate it, and then set an appropriate message on the page. Of course, if the ID is valid, you would also want to reach out to the server for the search results; you will look at this in Implementing AJAX with jQuery, later in this lesson. The following shows a version of the validateEmpId client-script.
function validateEmpId() { var empId = $("#MainContent_TextBoxEmpId").val(); if (empId.length < 8 || empId.length > 10) { $("#msgValidEmpId").text("* Invalid Employee ID"); } else { $("#msgValidEmpId").text("*"); /// call back to server ... } }
Figure 9-9 shows the page running in a browser. Notice the message displayed next to the text box. This is displayed after the search button click.
