You store and retrieve user profiles in a database by using a provider class. This class abstracts the storage and retrieval of the profile information from the actual profile itself. In this way, you can always configure a new provider (and data store) without having to change any of your code. ASP.NET provides a default, configured provider for use with user profiles. This provider is the SqlProfileProvider class found in the System.Web.Profile namespace. When ASP.NET is installed, a setting is added to the Machine.config file that connects the SqlProfileProvider class to an instance of a Microsoft SQL Server database on the local machine. This setting is AspNetSqlProfileProvider and is set to work with a local configured version of SQL Server. By default, this is Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition. However, you can change this. The following shows an example of the provider s configuration.

If personalization begins to fail during development, it might be caused by a corrupted database. Though you ll lose any saved personalization data, you can quickly get personalization working again by deleting the personalization database; simply stop the website and delete the ASPNETDB.mdf and ASPNETDB_log.ldf files from the App_Data directory. ASP.NET will automatically recreate these databases the next time you use personalization.

Configuring a New Profile Database
In most cases, you can rely on this database to exist in your development environment and therefore you will need to do nothing to configure a user profile provider or database. However, you might want to configure a provider to use a standard version of SQL Server, which can use more processor cores and memory than SQL Server Express Edition and thus might perform better if you have a very busy website and a large number of users. To do so, you must first generate the database schema on the database server. ASP.NET provides the Aspnet_regsql.exe tool to help. The Aspnet_regsql.exe tool can be found on your development machine at %windir% \Microsoft.NET\Framework\%version%. For example, on a standard installation of a Windows 7 development machine, you can find this tool at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework \v4.0.30319. When you run the tool, you have the option of running it in command-line mode or using the user interface to walk through a wizard that allows you to set up the profile schema database. In command-line mode, you have the option to set the database name (-d), the server name (-S), and other important information such as login (-U) and password (-P). There are a large number of other options, which are described in detail at http://msdn.microsoft.com /en-us/library/x28wfk74.aspx. For example, this tool can be used to set up more than just the profile table. It is also used to define the role, membership, and Web Part tables. To define the tables you want to set up, you use the -A command and append another letter(s) based on the table you want to set up. For example, -A all sets up all the tables, whereas -A p only sets up the Profile table and -A c only sets up the Personalization table. The following example configures the profile table (-A p) for the server (-S) of localhost by using Windows credentials (-E).
