Because we do not write directly to the RODC, no changes will originate at the RODC. In turn this means that the writable DCs that are replication partners to the RODC do not have to pull changes from the RODC. This also reduces the workload of bridgehead servers in the hub and the effort required to monitor replication. Any changes or corruption that a malicious user might make on an RODC cannot replicate from the RODC to the rest of the forest. RODC unidirectional replication applies to both AD DS and Distributed File System (DFS) Replication. The RODC performs normal inbound replication for AD DS and DFS Replication changes.

The default setting for an RODC is to not store user or computer credentials with the exceptions of the computer account of the RODC itself and a special krbtgt account for the RODC. You must explicitly configure any other credential caching on an RODC. Please see 14 for more information. In branch offices that have an RODC, the RODC will advertise itself as the Key Distribution Center (KDC), but when it signs or encrypts ticket-granting ticket (TGT) requests, the RODC uses a different krbtgt account and password than the KDC on a writable DC.

The Password Replication Policy will then determine whether a user s credentials or a computer s credentials can be replicated from the writable DC to the RODC. If the Password Replication Policy allows it, the writable DC replicates the credentials to the RODC, and the RODC caches them for future use. After the credentials are cached on the RODC, the RODC can directly service that user s log-on requests until the credentials change, which means that it does not have to cross the WAN for each log-on request. When a TGT is signed with the krbtgt account of the RODC, the RODC recognizes that it has a cached copy of the credentials; if another DC signs the TGT, however, the RODC forwards requests to a writable DC. You should limit credential caching only to users who actually need to be authenticated by the RODC, thereby limiting the potential exposure of credentials by a compromise of the RODC. I recommend that you allow only a small subset of domain users to have credentials cached on any given RODC. In the event that the RODC is stolen, only those credentials that are cached can potentially be cracked, and in most cases these are only domain users and do not have privileged rights. An administrator can modify the default Password Replication Policy to allow users credentials to be cached at the RODC. You manage this via the new Password Replication Policy tab on the DC Properties sheet (Figure 9-6). If you click the Advanced button on this tab, you will see what passwords have been sent to the RODC, what passwords are currently stored on the RODC, and what accounts have authenticated to the RODC, including accounts that are not currently defined in the security
