Securing Server Roles

Some are Web servers. Some are file servers. Others are domain controllers (DCs) or infrastructure servers, such as Domain Name System (DNS) and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Then, of course, there is the DC/File Server/Web Server/Application Server/Firewall/DHCP/ DNS server, also known as "the server" in a small business. (For more on that, see 15, Small Business Considerations. ) But, none of them are anything until you deploy one or more roles to them. Because every server is not made equal, it stands to reason that the same configuration is not optimal for every server. This seems rather obvious if one considers the fact that to meet the needs of each role, the server must have certain software installed and settings made. As soon as you install new software on a server you modify how that server operates, and that means you need to reanalyze how that server is secured. This is discussed at length in 13, Securing the Network. In spite of the logic in the argument that servers must be secured in accordance with their roles, the appearance of tools and documentation that really support doing so is relatively recent. The first tool dedicated to this was the Security Configuration Wizard (SCW), which first shipped in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 in 2005. In this chapter we will discuss the concept of role-based security, the tools you use to manage server roles in Windows Server 2008, and the ultimate roles-based server: Server Core. Before we do that, however, we will start with some crucial terminology.
