When you set up a publicly exposed Web site, pick the right tool for the job. While Internet Information Services 6 is a rock-solid Web platform with a stellar security track record, and Internet Information Services 7 is anticipated to be the same, it is just common sense to not place a publicly accessible Web site on your critical business server. Either externally host it through one of the many hosted or Windows Live offerings, or purchase the Web edition and set up a separate server. While small organizations may have Web services on domain controllers for purposes of remote access and e-mail, you should separate Web sites that allow anonymous connections from authenticated ones to minimize risks.

For many years, Microsoft has put together a server platform that combines server management and information worker technologies in a bundle for up to 75 users or devices. In the Windows Server 2008 era, the Cougar platform is only offered on the 64-bit platform and includes a bundling of Microsoft SQL Server, Windows SharePoint Services, Windows Software Update Services and parts of Forefront, Microsoft s security suite for Exchange, Windows SharePoint Services, and Windows clients. As in the Windows Server 2003 era, the Windows Server 2008 Standard version of Cougar will not be able to form trusts relationships with other domains, and the products included will not be able to be split to other servers (nor will this be allowed in its end-user licensing).

Part III:
Common Security Scenarios
In the standard installation of the product, everything must be placed on the one server. Remote access to workstations, e-mail, and Windows SharePoint Services is provided by a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) secured Web portal called Remote Web Workplace. Also included in the product are the renowned administration wizards. Loved by most, hated by some, the wizards are scripted routines for installing; setting up; and deploying Domain Name Services (DNS), Active Directory (AD), Internet connections, and other networking and deployment needs and ensuring that the deployment is easily reproduced in a consistent and secure manner. Basic tasks of the server, as shown in Figure 15-2, are clearly defined for the onsite administrator or remote consultant.
Figure 15-2 Getting Started tasks.
The biggest change in the Cougar platform in the 2008 era is that it will be deployed with one network interface card and will need an external firewall. ISA Server, Microsoft s firewall software, can no longer be placed on top of the single Cougar server, nor can the server be set up with the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) based firewall that was used in the Standard version in the past to provide alternate firewall functionality. Since the Windows Firewall is enabled, the RRAS based IP packet filtering firewall is no longer supported, nor recommended. As shown in Figure 15-3, this separate firewall must now be placed outside the domain controller, bringing Cougar in line with the best practices of separating the firewall from the domain controller and thus removing one server role from the system. Customers with Software Assurance will have the ISA Server that they are licensed for shipped to them separately.
