What is a server It is a computer system whose purpose it is to expose some portion of itself to clients whether that portion is data, applications, or a mixture of the two. A data server is naturally more at risk from other networked systems than a client because it must have some of its defenses opened to allow access. An application server is even more at risk: Not only have its defenses been opened to allow access, but it must also execute tasks on request from other systems. Securing an application server requires paying attention to the three As : authentication, authorization, and auditing. Only by monitoring all three can you restrict who gets in and what she can do, and trace what she did to ensure that your restrictions have been faithfully obeyed. Windows Server 2008 has several methods of serving applications to your users. In this chapter, I will focus on using Internet Information Server 7 (IIS 7) for this purpose. In each case, you need to decide how much you will open your server s defenses to serve applications to your users. Much of that decision involves knowing what your applications are and where they come from as well as who your users are and where they come from.

One of the best security changes in IIS 7.0 is the new built-in anonymous account IUSR and the IIS_IUSRS user group. In the past, XCOPY deployment worked but was not completely transparent you still needed to take care of the access control lists (ACLs) on content being copied to the IIS server. In IIS 7.0, the product team took a step forward by making the anonymous account built into the operating system; this decoupled the dependency between user account and resource content, providing a full XCOPY experience in terms of content access permissions. You also get fewer accounts to manage because the same anonymous user SID exists on all IIS 7.0 computers. And you have fewer password-expiration headaches to deal with than with the old IUSR_computername anonymous account. In addition, the new IIS_IUSRS user group replaces the old IIS_WPG user group that was predefined with certain privileges and rights for starting worker processes in IIS 6.0. This means that in IIS 7.0 you no longer need to make the customer application pool identity a member of the IIS_IUSRS user group. During run time, the IIS_IUSRS group SID is injected into the worker process token, implicitly making the account a member of the new built-in user group. This membership is done dynamically and enabled by default in IIS 7.0. Bernard Cheah, Microsoft MVP Windows Server IIS

As they originated, the Internet and the World Wide Web were designed to share information freely so that everyone would get complete access to everyone else s data. Because of this, you will find that your easiest and most secure configuration is to configure your server to work in an open fashion, freely providing information to all who connect. Do not get me wrong. I am not about to suggest that you make your company s secrets open to the world. I am simply expressing that the most easily secured Internet server is one that serves public information or provides services to the public without having to distinguish between clients, or authorize activity based on authenticating the client user in any way. Much of the Internet still runs with static content updated at regular intervals by humans uploading new content to the server from inside the firewall. As long as users are prevented from uploading and are restricted to seeing files only from the published data source they will never see anything that you do not want them to. Your site may treat client users as anonymous and undistinguished from one another, and your data as unchanging pages that contain nothing more complex than pictures or links to other pages. However, it is in the dynamic Internet where the server executes
