If the users in your organization already have client certificates associated with their user accounts in Active Directory, you may want to use Active Directory Client Certificate Mapping to authenticate them as they log on. Rather simply, the configuration setting for Active Directory Client Certificate Mapping is in the applicationHost.config file in the following section:

Note
Please note carefully that while the other models of Client Certificate Mapping are under an XML Path ending in iisClientCertificateMapping, the Active Directory Client Certificate Mapping XML Path ends in clientCertificateMapping.
When Active Directory Client Certificate Mapping is enabled, the incoming client s certificate information is looked up in Active Directory, and the user who is identified by that certificate is the user under which access will be granted. Access will be denied if the client s certificate is not found.
Digest Authentication
In Digest Authentication, a user name is provided by the client, along with a hash generated from the user s password and some random data. Like Basic Authentication, Digest Authentication is supported by many browsers, and is an Internet standard defined in Request for Comment (RFC) 2617. It specifies how the hash is to be generated from the password and random information (known as a nonce value) specified in the server s challenge to the client s initial anonymous request. Because the password is not sent in this authentication method, and the nonce provides for protection against a replay attack, the Digest Authentication method is preferable over the Basic Authentication method described earlier. You can easily enable Digest Authentication through the user interface, if you have enabled the module DigestAuthenticationModule. The one configuration parameter for Digest Authentication is the realm parameter, which is given as a prompt to the client when asking for user name and password. Note that the realm should match the domain name where users passwords are to be verified. Configuration for Digest Authentication is under the following section of the applicationHost.config XML file:
<configuration> <system.webServer> <security> <authentication> <digestAuthentication ...>
There are two elements under this section:
enabled is set to true to enable Digest Authentication; is set to false otherwise. realm is the name of the realm prompted in the challenge to the client. This must be the same as the domain name to generate the digest that will match the hash stored at the domain controller.
