You can modify the default 16-hour refresh value on the security Client Side Extension (CSE) by modifying the following registry value on client computers: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ GPExtensions\{827D319E-6EAC-11D2-A4EA-00C04F79F83A}\MaxNoGPOListChangesInterval. This value stores the number of minutes between forced refresh intervals with a default of decimal 960. You can also adjust each CSE s policy processing behavior to force it to process policy, even if there are no changes, during each foreground and background cycle. This may result in a lot of additional network traffic and system utilization, but will ensure that a given CSE s policies are always the most recent. You can do this by modifying each CSE s policy processing item under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy for each computer you want to impact.

The first change to the Group Policy infrastructure was mostly invisible to administrators. Prior to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the Group Policy engine ran within the trusted Winlogon process in Windows. This made a certain amount of sense at the time but also presented some challenges. Primarily, Microsoft or third-party Client Side Extensions (CSEs) also ran within this process, and if bugs arose in these CSEs, they could cause Windows to stop responding. In Windows Vista and Window Server 2008, Microsoft moved the Group Policy engine out of Winlogon and into the Group Policy Client service running within a svchost.exe process, except that it cannot be stopped or started by an administrator at least not very easily. The service is hardened to improve the odds that it is always running when Windows is running. And because the service is no longer running in Winlogon, errant CSEs will only crash the service, rather than the entire operating system.

Group Policy
was proprietary and the text strings that appeared in the Group Policy editor were held within the same ADM file that held the registry locations for a given binding. In addition, each GPO held a set of ADM files within the SYSVOL portion of the GPO called the Group Policy Template (GPT). These ADM files were generally the same across all GPOs in a domain but were nonetheless replicated redundantly to all domain controllers in the domain. Starting with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft introduced the new ADMX and ADML file formats. The ADMX file is a new XML-based syntax for describing Administrative Template policies. Each ADMX file has a corresponding ADML file that contains language-specific strings for that set of policy settings. By separating the policy items from the text string representations, Microsoft can more easily allow administrators using multi-language versions of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 to manage Administrative Template policies in their native languages. The new ADMX and ADML files also use a different storage model than previous versions. ADMX and ADML files ship from Microsoft by default and are found in the %windir%\policydefinitions folder in a standard Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 installation (see Figure 7-6).
