Notice that this message contains the server, database, schema, and queue name of the queue that needs to be serviced so the external application has all the information it needs to get to the queue that has messages waiting . This event is all you need to build your own external activation process . Your process should open a connection to the database where the ExternalActivationQueue is located and start reading messages from the queue . For each message received, start a program to read messages from the queue specified in the EVENT_INSTANCE message . The external activation program should read and process messages until the queue is empty just like an activation stored procedure .

Writing an external activation service isn t too difficult, but implementing robust, reliable, flexible application can be a challenge . After the SQL Server 2008 release the development team implemented a fully supported external activation service and released it in a SQL Server 2008 feature pack . It is now available for download here: http://www.microsoft.com/ downloads/details.aspx familyid=228de03f-3b5a-428a-923f-58a033d316e1&displaylang=en. The Microsoft SQL Service Broker External Activator is a Windows service named Service Broker External Activator . It receives activation messages from the QUEUE_ACTIVATION event queue and starts an external process to receive Service Broker messages from the queue identified in the event message . External activation tracks the processes it has started and attempts to restart them after a failure . Just as with internal activation, the external activator assumes that the processes it starts will continue to receive and process messages until the queue is empty . The length of the WAITFOR parameter will determine how long the queue must be empty before the activation process exits . In many cases, an external process is more expensive to start than a stored procedure so you may want to consider using a longer WAITFOR time for an external activation process . To function correctly, the external activator needs to know how to connect to and receive messages from the event queue and which external process should be started . These values are specified in the file C:\Program Files\Service Broker\External Activator\Config\EAService .config . Here s an example of a configuration:

The NotificationService element specifies the connection to the activation event service . The service name is an attribute of the NotificationService element, and the ConnectionString element is an ADO .NET connection string for the database where the service is located . Note that for security reasons, only Windows authenticated connections are supported . Even though the NotificationService element is wrapped in a list, the current external activation service only supports one activation event service .

The ApplicationServiceList element contains an ApplicationService element for each queue that has a QUEUE_ACTIVATION SQL Event Notification defined . The OnNotification element specifies the server, database, schema, and queue names that are matched against the names in the QUEUE_ACTIVATION event to determine which queue fired the event . The LaunchInfo element specifies the program that gets started to process the messages on the queue that fired the activation event . The Concurrency element contains two attributes, min and max, that specify the minimum and maximum number of activation processes the external activator will start . If the minimum concurrency attribute is greater than 0, the specified number of processes are started as soon as the external activation service starts . This is useful if the activation process takes a while to start because there will always be a minimum number of processes available to process messages on a queue even if the queue is empty . More detailed information about setting up the external activation service is available in the SSBEA .doc document that comes with the release . I m not including sample code for implementing an external Service Broker activation program . There are good samples in the Service Broker samples that ship with the database release . Remember that just as with internal activation, the WAITFOR timeout value controls how long the queue must be empty before the activation process detects the empty queue status and terminates . If you set a minimum concurrency value to keep a process running all the time, you can set the WAITFOR timeout lower than you would with an internally activated procedure because at least the specified minimum number of processes will always be available to receive incoming messages .
