This chapter tours the different methods you can use to connect Silverlight to Web-based services that provide data. Styles and Templates in Silverlight
In the last few chapters, you ve learned about many of the controls that are available in Microsoft Silverlight, including how to write your own controls. The Silverlight controls are designed to have a coherent, rich look and feel out of the box, but you might want to tweak the default appearance of controls to fit your own particular design. Fortunately, Silverlight controls are very easy to customize, and Silverlight offers you powerful styling and templating features that you can use to customize the look of your application.
Understanding Styling
To understand styling, look at a simple case in which you use a button in a Silverlight application. Following is the Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) for a Button control:

This code renders a button in the default Silverlight style (which is silver and looks like it is lit from above), and the result looks like the button shown in Figure 13-1.

As you saw in 8, Silverlight Core Controls, and 9, Silverlight Controls: Advanced Controls, many of the controls, including Button, are content controls, meaning that they can render XAML content. For example, a Button control can contain content much more interesting than just a string that says Click Me! You can add features to content controls to offer users a richer experience when interacting with the controls.
