The designing of Office 2007 was started in August 2003. The general perception of the development team regarding Office 2003 was that it was good enough, it was complete, and there was no real innovation needed. But when asking real people about it, the Office team heard a totally different story, such as responses like this: I m sure there s a way to do this, but I can t figure out how. Office is so powerful; I would be better at my job if I knew how to use it more. The conclusion of the team was this: The user interface was failing the users. With every new release of Office, new features had been added, but too few users found or used them. The product became more and more complicated. People wanted a better way to get things done, but the assumption was that the product would never change to satisfy that need.

The traditional user interface (UI) of Office Word 2003 with drop-down menus and toolbars resembles the user interface of Office Word 2.0, which was released in 1992. Over the years, more toolbars were added, from two in Word 2.0 to eight in Word 6.0 (1994) to nine in Word 95 to 18 in Word 97. The Office UI became bloated. Of course, there were many other UI innovations, such as the red squiggle for calling attention to spell-checking errors, the green squiggle for noting grammar errors, the addition of Microsoft IntelliSense, on-the-fly spelling corrections, and so forth. In Word 2000, a few more toolbars were added, bringing the total number to 23. But there was a big effort to clear the UI and to change the impression that the Office UI was bloated. As part of this effort, the team invented new UI concepts, such as Intelli-Menu (an expandable menu with a chevron button), Show/Hide toolbar buttons that change based on frequency of use, a toolbar that can be expanded by clicking on a chevron button, a window on the taskbar for each document (Tabbed Multi-Document Interface), and a side pane for help. Instead of reducing the complexity of the product, Office 2000 tried to hide it. This approach caused great confusion. The UI was not consistent, and users could not find the commands they needed. The perception that Office was too complex had not changed. In Office Word 2002, the number of toolbars reached 30. The Office team ran out of ideas about how to solve the complexity problem. To make a change in this direction, they created the task pane, a new side pane capable of holding more commands. In Office Word 2002, there were eight task panes. Office Word 2003 had 31 toolbars and 19 task panes. With so many toolbars and task panes, the screen was even more cluttered. The working area that remained for writing an actual document was too small, even on large 24-inch monitors. Figure 11-1 shows the increase in toolbars and task panes over the years with each new version of Microsoft Office Word.

The first time that Office 12 and the new Fluent UI were presented was during the 2005 Microsoft Professional Developer Conference (PDC). The keynote address at the 2005 PDC was a real show. Microsoft revealed, one by one, its new technologies, including Windows Vista, Ajax, the .NET Framework 3.0, LINQ, Windows Mobile (discussed in the upcoming sidebar), and of course Office 12 (which is known as Office 2007).
How I Did Not Miss the First Presentation of Office 2007
I was lucky to be at PDC 2005. During the first period of the PDC 2005 keynote address, Microsoft Platforms Group Vice President, Jim Allchin, offered to sell I-Mate JASJAR devices for $149 instead of the list-price of more than $1000. He said that there were about 1000 devices to be sold starting immediately! I was with a bunch of my colleagues. Very quickly, we understood there were not enough devices for everyone. A few seconds later, I was alone in the audience with only one colleague because all my other colleagues went to get in line to buy the device. Because I stayed, I was able to see the first Office 12 Demo! My colleagues did not. Later, I was one of the first people to leave at the end of the keynote address and succeeded in buying one of the last devices. I went to one of the available computers, logged-in, and started the purchasing process. When I clicked the final OK button, I heard someone nearby say the words Sold out. . I bought the 997th device out of the 1000 available.
