If you run out of USB ports on your laptop and want to connect more devices, you can either use a docking station (as described later in this chapter), or you can purchase a USB hub from a computer accessory retailer. A USB hub connects to one of your laptop USB ports, but provides additional ports (usually four to eight) to which you can connect more devices. When you connect a USB device to a laptop for the first time, you usually have to install a program to enable the device. Refer to the documentation that comes with the device, and then follow the procedure necessary to connect it for the first time. After the device has been set up, Windows XP recognizes it the next time you connect it.

External storage drives. You can also purchase a hard drive as a separate unit that connects to the computer with a USB or Ethernet cable. External hard disks are a cost effective way to expand the amount of storage for your mobile PC. They are also extremely useful as a place to back up all of the data from your mobile PC.

Optical drives. If your laptop has an internal optical drive, you can most likely find it along one of the edges of the computer. You can read from and/or write to optical discs, such as CDs and DVDs. The type of optical drive your laptop might have varies.
Tip To find out what type of optical drive you have, look at the logo on the drive. For a complete list of available optical drives, refer to More About Optical Drives later in this chapter.
Getting to Know Your Mobile PC Hardware
External optical drives. Some models of mobile PCs ship with an optical drive as a separate unit that connects to the computer with a cable, or is built into the docking station. An external drive can be convenient because you can leave it behind to reduce the carrying weight of your mobile PC, but get all the functions of the optical drive when at your desk.
More About Optical Drives
Some newer drives offer the ability to record onto special types of disc. The proliferation of drive types has also led to the availability of different disc types. The table below presents the types of optical drives currently available and the discs they can read from and write to.

Understanding PC Cards
Most laptops have at least one socket that allows you to plug-in a PC Card (also called a PCMCIA card) to easily expand the capabilities of your computer. PC Cards are roughly the size of a credit card, and have a set of metal connectors on one end. A wide variety of PC Cards are available from major computer accessory retailers, including the following: Wireless network card. don t have it built in.
