A firewall is a set of programs that filters all network packets to determine whether to forward them toward their destination. Firewalls are often installed away from the rest of the network so that no incoming request can get directly at private network resources. For mobile users, firewalls allow remote access to the private network through the use of secure logon procedures and authentication certificates. There are two types of firewalls: Hardware firewalls. Many wireless access points and broadband routers for home networking have built-in hardware firewalls, which provide good protection for most home networks. The Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station is one example of a wireless access point with a built-in hardware firewall and other integrated home networking features. Software firewalls. Firewalls are designed to hide your computer when it goes online, thus helping to protect your computer (and your privacy). A firewall can also detect traffic and analyze where it is going or coming from. If the location is suspect, then that traffic can be blocked. When a location is blocked, your firewall can create a log file that records the addresses and names of sites attempting to invade your computer. If necessary, a firewall can also dynamically open ports and allow your computer to receive traffic that you have specifically requested, such as a Web page address that you have clicked.

The Windows Firewall can block useful tasks, such as sharing files or printers through a network, transferring files in applications (for example, instant messaging), or hosting multiplayer games. Nonetheless, Microsoft recommends that you use a firewall to help protect your computer. In this exercise, you will turn on the built-in firewall for an existing connection.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel click the Security Center link. In the Windows Security Center window click Windows Firewall.
Introduction to Networking
In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the On (recommended) option.
To apply the new settings, click OK.
Important Windows Firewall will help protect a computer on a wireless network, but will not restrict access to the network itself. You should configure your wireless network to use a network key using either Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or WEP.
Using Up-to-Date Antivirus Software
You may unwittingly bring a virus onto your computer through the Internet or through e-mail attachments. Antivirus software helps protect your computer against viruses. Many computers come with antivirus software installed, but you can also purchase antivirus software and install it yourself. If you notice unusual messages on your screen, decreased system performance, missing data, or inability to access your hard drive, run your virusdetection software immediately to minimize the chances of losing data. Programs on floppy disks may also contain viruses. Scan all floppy disks before copying or opening files from them, or starting your computer from them. Just having an antivirus program installed is not enough, however. You also need to keep your antivirus software up to date as new viruses are created every day. In this exercise, you will search for antivirus software installed on your computer, and then verify that it is up-to-date.
Introduction to Networking BE SURE TO install antivirus software before beginning this exercise.
Click Start, point to All Programs, and then look for the word virus in the program list.
Tip You might also see the name of a popular antivirus manufacturer or package. These include McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro, and Symantec. 2 3 4
To verify that your antivirus software is up-to-date, click the program name on the All Programs menu. In the anti-virus program window, click the Help menu, and then click the Version Information command (or equivalent). Look for the update status and the date of the last update. If you still aren t sure whether your antivirus software is up to date, go to your antivirus software provider s Web site and cross-check the date of the latest available updates with the date of your last downloaded update.
Important Having two different antivirus programs installed on one computer can cause conflicts on your computer. Always uninstall existing antivirus software before installing another.
