Confirm that the person with whom you want to share files also has a mobile PC that supports IrDA by following the steps above for that computer. Once it has been confirmed, continue with the following steps. Place the two computers within 3 feet of each other, and make sure that the infrared ports are facing each other. After a few seconds, a notification appears on both computers, notifying you that there is another PC nearby, and the Wireless Link icon should appear in the notification area.

To terminate the connection, move the PCs so that the infrared ports do not point at each other.
Important The data that is sent over the infrared link is not encrypted. If you are concerned about security, make sure the two PCs are very close to one another so that the data is not unintentionally available to other nearby PCs or devices.
Creating an Ad Hoc Wireless Network to Share Data
If you use your mobile PC to connect to the Internet or any other networks, you are probably familiar with establishing and using wireless connections. You can also configure PCs to connect directly to one another by creating an ad hoc wireless network your very own mini network. This is particularly useful if you are not in range of an infrastructure wireless network, and want to share information, for example, to share files with a group of people you meet at a conference. Using Windows XP, you can configure a secure ad hoc wireless network by either using the Wireless Setup Wizard or using a USB flash drive to transfer the configuration data between the mobile PCs. In this exercise, you will create and use a wireless network to share files between PCs.
BE SURE TO disconnect from all wired or wireless networks and have a USB flash drive and a second mobile PC running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later available before beginning this exercise. USE the Yearly Sales Presentation PowerPoint presentation in the practice file folder for this topic. These practice files are located in the My Documents\Microsoft Press\Laptops and Tablet PCs with Windows XP SBS\Presentations\SharingData folder.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, click the Network and Internet Connections link.
Using Your Mobile PC in Meetings
In the Network and Internet Connections window, click Network Connections. In the Network Connections window, right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon, and then click View Available Wireless Network.
Important If you are connected to another wireless network, click the network in the list, and then click the Disconnect button. 5 6 7
In the Network Tasks area of the Wireless Network Connection dialog box, click the Set up a wireless network link. On the first page of the Wireless Network Setup Wizard, click Next. On the Choose a key for your wireless network page, enter a name for the network and click Next.
G05tb16 [insert Wireless network setup wizard on Choose key image]
On the Choose a method for setting up your wireless network page, click Next (since this list of steps assumes that you are using a USB flash drive).
Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port of your mobile PC, and then on the Save settings to your flash drive page, click Next. After a few seconds, the ad hoc wireless network configuration settings will be copied to your USB flash drive.
