Some people might think of the mobile PC solely as a useful work tool, but they re missing a great opportunity to use it also as a portable entertainment device. You can play games, music, and movies, as well as store and view digital photographs wherever you are. In this chapter, you will learn how to use Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 on your mobile PC to view, listen to, and share digital media that you can enjoy while you are at home or on the road. Windows Media Player 10 and Microsoft Windows XP are a great combination for enjoying music and video on your computer. You can play CDs and DVDs, download new music, listen to the radio over the Internet, and much more. Windows Media Player 10 includes several new features that make it even better than previous versions for viewing and sharing media on your mobile PC. Some of the key features are: Digital music playback. Windows Media Player 10 can play different types of music files including CDs, MP3s, and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. Burning CDs. If your mobile PC supports CD-RW, you can compile your favorite music tracks and create your own CDs with Windows Media Player 10.

Media Library. Windows Media Player 10 provides a central catalog of all the music and video files stored on your PC. You can search and sort for media by a variety of categories, such as album name, artist, and genre. DVD playback. If your mobile PC supports DVD (as most new computers do), you can watch your favorite DVDs by using Windows Media Player 10. Smart Jukebox. When you re ready to listen to music, you can let Windows Media Player 10 select which tracks to play based on your listening habits and preferences. For example, you can specify that you want to hear a random selection of music tracks that you have recently added to your Media Library. Online Stores. Windows Media Player 10 provides links to several Web sites where you can buy and download music to listen to. Digital audio player synchronization. You can connect a digital audio player to your mobile PC and use Windows Media Player 10 to copy music files to the audio player so that you can listen to them away from your computer.

Windows Media Player is a great music player that you can use to quickly find the music you want to play, and easily control the playback of music when it is playing.

You can use Windows Media Player in four different modes: Full Screen. In this mode, the playback window fills the entire screen. The playlist area is hidden, and the Windows taskbar and media controls only appear when the pointing device (the mouse or the tablet pen) is moved. Full Mode. In this mode, the title bar, media controls, and playlist are visible, and you can resize the player as you can any other program window. Skin Mode. This mode displays smaller versions of the playback area and media controls. Different skins are available, which you can use to change the way the player looks. Mini Mode. This mode displays only the media controls, on the Windows taskbar, and is ideal for listening to music while you are performing other tasks on your computer.

In this exercise, you will play music, create a playlist, change the visualization of the music you re listening to, and try out the various playback modes available in Windows Media Player.

Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player opens in Full Mode and, if this is the first time you have used Windows Media Player, starts playing a sample music track.
