You might not give much thought to the battery that powers your mobile PC until it runs out at an inopportune moment such as when you re putting the finishing touches on a PowerPoint presentation during a flight to a client meeting. However, there are steps you can take to improve the power efficiency of mobile devices. You have probably heard the term power management before, and you might have wondered what it meant and why it seems to be so important for mobile devices in general and mobile PCs in particular. In a nutshell, the term power management refers to the steps you can take to reduce power to components that aren t being used. Good power management can double or triple the life of a battery. The default Windows XP configuration provides good power management. If you re interested in fine-tuning the settings, here are some ways you can optimize your battery power: A spinning hard drive can certainly drain battery power. So, by setting the hard drive to turn off at a certain point, for instance three minutes, you save significant power.

Reduce the level of backlighting and dim your screen. On color systems, you can save quite a bit of power by changing to black-and-white (monochrome) mode. Avoid running graphically intensive programs, such as games. Watching movies doesn t drain your battery as much as you might think because spinning the DVD drive isn t as bad as spinning the hard drive. Take advantage of Intel SpeedStep if you re using a mobile PC with an Intel processor (Pentium III or greater). SpeedStep cycles down the processor on newer Intelbased computers when you re mobile. For example, if you have a 2 GHz Pentium 4 laptop, it cycles down to 1.2 GHz when you re running on batteries. Turn off the modem, if not needed, and remove any PC Cards not in use. If you don t plan on using the battery for a month or more, store it in a clean, dry, cool place away from heat and metal objects. NiCd, NiMH, and LiIon batteries selfdischarge during storage. Turn off the monitor when not in use: It consumes more power than any other mobile PC component.

Battery Dos and Don ts
You can extend battery life and power to the mobile PC using software settings as described in the previous section, but taking good care of the battery itself is also critical. Battery Dos: A new battery comes in a discharged condition and must be charged before use. Upon initial use or after a prolonged storage period, the battery might require several charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum capacity.
When charging a battery for the first time, the device might indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes a normal phenomenon with rechargeable batteries. Remove the battery from the device, reinsert it, and repeat the charging procedure. It is important to condition (fully discharge and then fully charge) the battery every two to three weeks. Failure to do so might significantly shorten the battery s life. If the battery will not be in use for a month or longer, remove it from the device and store it in a cool, dry, clean place. It is normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging. Actual battery run-time depends on the power demands made by the equipment. A notebook computer s battery life depends on screen brightness and the use of the CPU, the hard drive, and other peripherals. The total run-time of the battery is heavily dependent on the design of the equipment. To ensure maximum performance of the battery, optimize the computer s power management features. For more information about managing battery power, see Getting More Power Out of Your Battery in 5, Using Your Mobile PC in Meetings."
Battery Don'ts:
Do not drop, hit, or otherwise abuse the computer; this could result in the exposure of the corrosive cell contents. Do not expose the battery to moisture or rain. Keep the battery away from fire or other sources of extreme heat. Incinerating or exposing the battery to extreme heat might result in an explosion.
