Maintaining and Protecting Your Mobile PC
In this chapter you will learn to: Clean your computer. Free up disk space. Speed up access to data. Detect and repair disk errors. Back up files and folders. Restore your system to a previous state. Protect your computer against spyware.
There are a few housekeeping tips that you should keep in mind to maintain your mobile PC. In addition to protecting your computer against attacks from the Internet, you want to perform regular maintenance and cleaning of your PC to keep your system running smoothly. With Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you have better protection against viruses, hackers, and worms, as well as access to system tools that you can run periodically to optimize your computer s performance. In this chapter, you will learn how to use the tools provided in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to safeguard your privacy when you re online, free up disk space by clearing out unnecessary files, create a back-up of your files, and restore your system from that back-up if needed. You will also learn simple tips for cleaning your mobile PC. See Also

Maintaining and Protecting Your Mobile PC
Cleaning Your Computer
If you want your mobile PC to stay in good working order, you should clean it regularly. You not only need to clean your computer s drive disk, but also its screen, mouse, keyboard, and any and all fans and ports. A little regular maintenance will go a long way toward preventing major hardware failures. Your computer s two worst enemies are heat and moisture. Excess heat accelerates the deterioration of the delicate circuits in your system. Overheating is most often caused by dust and dirt; clogged vents and cooling fans can keep air from circulating properly, and even a thin coating of dust or dirt can raise the temperature of your computer s components. Before you begin to clean your computer, have the following supplies handy: Rubbing alcohol Compressed air (16-ounce can) Clean, lint-free white cloths Cotton swabs the longer the better A small vacuum LCD wipes
When you have the necessary supplies ready, shut down your mobile PC, disconnect any attached devices (such as mice and external CD drives), and unplug any attached cord from the electrical outlet. Follow these instructions to clean the specific parts or accessories of your computer: Case: Wipe the front and back panels of the case and use compressed air to clear any vents. Be careful not to blow dust into the computer or its disk drives. Mouse: If you have an attached non-optical mouse, unscrew the ring on the bottom of the mouse and remove the ball. Scrape the accumulated dirt and deposits off the two plastic rollers inside the ball s housing. If you have an optical mouse, simply blow off any dust that may have accumulated below the surface of the mouse. Touch pad: Moisten a soft, lint-free cloth with water, and then stroke it gently across the surface of the touch pad. Do not allow water from the cloth to seep between the touch pad and the surrounding palm rest. Keyboard: Turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to clear any debris stuck from between the keys. If that s not enough, use compressed air to finish the job. If the keys are really dirty, or stick when you press them, pry them off with a dampened cloth for easier cleaning.
