As you create and delete files and folders, install programs, or download files from the Internet, your computer saves these files in the first contiguous free space that is large enough to accommodate it. If your computer doesn t have a large enough section of free space for the file, the computer saves as much of it as possible in the largest available space and then saves the remaining data in the next free space, and so on. As a volume fills up with file and folder storage, new files are saved in pieces across the volume. When you delete files, the empty spaces left behind fill in randomly as you store new files. This is known as disk fragmentation.

Over time, fragmentation slows down disk access and degrades the overall performance of the system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk each time the file is opened to piece it back together, causing the response time to be significantly longer. Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer s hard disk so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up. In this exercise, you will run Disk Defragmenter on your mobile PC to gather all the scattered file fragments on your hard disk and write them into adjacent clusters so that each file occupies a contiguous section of the disk.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button.

You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.
