A volume must have at least 15 percent free space for Disk Defragmenter to completely and adequately defragment. Disk Defragmenter uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15 percent of free space, Disk Defragmenter will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files using Disk Cleanup or move them to another disk. You install new programs or a new version of Windows. Volumes often become fragmented after installing programs, so running Disk Defragmenter helps to ensure the best file system performance possible. In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your mobile PC, you can investigate the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility. When you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors tend to spread when Windows tries to write data to them, eventually slowing down hard disk performance and sometimes making data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the whole partition or drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced. Sooner or later, hard disks get bad sectors. If you use your computer daily, you should try to run this utility weekly to help prevent data loss. In this exercise, you will run the Error Checking utility on your mobile PC to search for and identify any bad sectors on your hard disk, and then attempt to recover them if any exist. BE SURE TO close all files before running the Error-Checking utility for this exercise. If the volume is currently in use, you will be prompted to indicate whether you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, when you do restart your system, disk checking will run and the disk will not be available to perform other tasks while this process is running. Troubleshooting
1 2 3 4 Click Start, and then click My Computer. In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties. In the dialog box that appears, click the Tools tab. Click the Check Now button. Maintaining and Protecting Your Mobile PC
In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start. Only select the Automatically fix file system errors check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors. G09tb06
If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.
Note If your drive is formatted as NTFS, Windows logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume. Backing Up Files and Folders
Just as you need to take care of the hardware that stores your data, you also need to protect your files and folders from accidental loss in case of hardware or storage media failure. Using the Backup utility that comes with Windows XP, you can create a duplicate copy of the data on your hard disk and then archive the data on another storage device. The backup storage medium can be a drive on your computer or a separate storage device, such as a removable disk. If the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased or overwritten, or becomes inaccessible because of a hard disk malfunction, you can easily restore the data from the archived copy. The Backup utility creates an accurate point-in-time copy of the contents of your hard disk, including any open files or files that are being used by the system. You can use the Backup utility to accomplish the following: Archive selected files and folders on your hard disk, and then restore them to your hard disk or any other accessible disk. Schedule regular backups to keep your archived data up-to-date. Use Automated System Recovery to save and restore all the system files and configuration settings needed to recover from a complete system failure. Make a copy of your computer s system partition, boot partition, and the files needed to start up your system in case of computer or network failure.
