Otherwise, you will need to use the Certificates console to approve the request by following these steps: 1. Launch the Certification Authority console from the Administrative Tools group. 2. In the left pane, click Pending Requests. As shown in Figure 9-12, the request you submitted is visible.

How to Configure IIS to Require SSL Encryption for a Web Site or Application
By default, IIS will accept both unencrypted HTTP and encrypted HTTPS requests after a certificate is configured. If you do not want to allow unencrypted requests, open the Web site properties dialog box, click the Directory Security tab, click the Edit button, and then select the Require Secure Channel (SSL) check box, as shown in Figure 9-13. Optionally, you can select the Require 128-Bit Encryption check box. Today, most clients will support 128-bit encryption, which is very difficult for an attacker to break. If you do not select the Require 128-Bit Encryption check box, clients that support 128bit encryption will still use 128-bit encryption.

Requiring HTTPS for a Web server ensures all communications are encrypted.
Off the Record
Requiring HTTPS encryption isn t all that useful because browsers don t automatically try to connect by using HTTPS. So if a user types just your Web server s domain name into a browser, as most users will do, the browser will attempt to connect with unencrypted HTTP If you don t allow unencrypted HTTP IIS returns a fairly complicated error mes. , sage. Some users will read the message and follow the instructions to connect to the Web site by using https:// in the URL, but others will simply think the Web server is down. A better way to require HTTPS is to set up a separate Web site in IIS to redirect standard HTTP requests to HTTPS. That way, when a user types just your domain name in a Web browser, your Web server will automatically redirect that user to your Web site using HTTPS.

Practice: Configuring SSL to Encrypt Web Communications
In this practice, you will create and configure an SSL certificate. Read the scenario and then complete the exercises that follow.
Scenario
Northwind Traders has an additional task for you: adding an SSL certificate to their public Web site at www.northwindtraders.com. Eric Rothenberg, the IT manager, calls you and says: We have one more task for you. I know this is more of a sysadmin task, but we don t have anyone who can do it for us, and you seem to know what you re doing. Could you install an SSL certificate on our Web site I can pay you, but I don t have a budget to buy a certificate. If there s a way we can get one without buying it ourselves, I would appreciate it. Use IT for the organization. Our headquarters are in Woburn, Massachusetts. You review the technical requirements before creating and configuring the SSL certificate. Technical Requirements Install Certificate Services on the computer, and use it to generate an SSL certificate with the following settings:
Web site name: www.northwindtraders.com Organization: Northwind Traders Organizational Unit: IT Location: Woburn, MA
