To test a Web application for vulnerability to cross-site scripting (CSS) attacks, your test method should perform the following steps: 1. Submit HTML-encoded input (such as <test /> ) to the method that processes user input. 2. Call the method that generates user output, and check for the presence of the HTML-encoded input. Fail the test if the input was not sanitized.

Practice: Building Automated Unit Tests
In this practice, you use NUnit to perform unit testing on a sample application. Then you add unit tests, and update the application so that it passes these unit tests. Complete the procedure in Exercise 1, and then answer the questions and complete the tasks in Exercises 2 and 3. If you are unable to answer a question, review the lesson materials and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter.
Lesson 1: Building Automated Unit Tests
Exercise 1: Running a Unit Test Against a Sample Application
In this exercise, you install NUnit and then run unit tests built into a sample application. 1. Download and install the latest version of NUnit from http://www.nunit.org/. 2. Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to copy the NorthwindUnitTesting folder from the companion CD to your My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\ folder. 3. In Windows Explorer, select the My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\ folder, and then double-click NorthwindUnitTesting.csproj. Visual Studio .NET 2003 will open the Northwind project. 4. In Visual Studio .NET, verify that the nunit.framework reference exists. If it does not, click the Project menu, and then click Add Reference. On the .NET tab, click the nunit.framework component. Click Select, and then click OK. 5. Click the Build menu, and then click Build Solution.
Visual Studio .NET 2003 compiles the application.
6. Launch the NUnit graphical tool named Nunit-Gui. 7. Click the File menu, and then click Open. In the Open Project dialog box, select the My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\NorthwindUnitTesting\bin\Debug \NorthwindUnitTesting.exe file. Click Open. 8. Click the Run button. As shown in Figure 3-1, NUnit runs each of the test methods and reports the results. There were two failures, which indicates that you have some work to do to protect against vulnerabilities. Also, you should add several unit tests.

Testing Applications for Vulnerabilities
Exercise 2: Adding Unit Tests
In this exercise, you identify additional tests that should be added to the sample application, and then create the tests. Read the scenario and answer the questions that follow. Scenario Currently, the DatabaseClassTest class contains five tests:
CheckInventoryByID Verifies that the application can successfully return a valid inventory value given a known product ID CheckInventoryByName Verifies that the application can successfully return a valid inventory value given a known product name FilterProductIDTooHigh Verifies that the application throws an ArgumentOutOfRangeException given an invalid product ID that is too high FilterProductNameTooShort Verifies that the application throws an ArgumentOutOfRangeException given an invalid product name that is zero characters SQLInjectionFiltering Verifies that the application can successfully query for a product name containing a SQL delimiter (an apostrophe)
However, your manager does not think that these tests are sufficient. Questions and Tasks 1. What other tests should you add 2. Add the extra test methods, and rerun the tests. 3. How long did step 2 take 4. Why should you bother to do this Is it worth it 5. What additional test methods did you create Show your work.
Exercise 3: Adding Bounds Checking to the Application
In this exercise, you update the sample application so that it passes the existing unit tests. 1. The FilterProductNameTooShort test is currently failing because the Database.GetInventoryFromProductName method is not throwing an exception when an empty string is passed. How can you fix the method 2. The FilterProductIDTooHigh test is currently failing because the Database.GetInventoryFromProductID method is not throwing an exception when a high value is passed. How can you fix the method 3. How will you fix the application so that it passes the tests you added
